Excerpt from The Young Emancipator, a Freethought Magazine, Vol. 1: November, 1878 The other day I heard a woman say The trams run more smoother than the 'buses. Now, this should have been more smoothly. Tor, for another example, we should say: Glass is smoother than iron; such a word as more being quite unnecessary. The very best is a phrase which is often used, and is generally accepted as substantially correct. But it is nevertheless an absurdity. The best is the best, viz., the highest degree of goodness, and the addition of the word very can add no force to that. The first part of our journey would be pleasant enough our road would wind through vineyards and gardens, with here and there the villa of some wealthy Italian to enliven the scene. Excerpt from The Young Emancipator, Vol. 1: A Freethought Magazine; December, 1878 How long I had been wrapped in slumber l, of course cannot say, as sleep and dreams know nothing of the flight of time; but it seemed as if I had scarcely closed my eyes, before the vision I have to recount appeared. It seems to have been waiting for sleep to put me within its power, and no sooner did it see its advantage than I was pounced upon, and led captive at its pleasure. I have called my dream a vision, for such it was - all that I am going to relate I saw and beard. With such intense realism, that everything I ever experienced when awake seems dreamy and unreal, in comparison with what was burnt m upon the substance of my being during that sleep. The reason may be this: Everything we receive through the senses is sifted, so to speak, like the sun light coming down through a fog; but a vision falls With all its fervency upon the sensorium, without any sifting whatever from the clear sky of the inner world. Excerpt from The Young Emancipator, Vol. 1: October, 1878 The audacity of its sentences can only be compared with the inhumanity with which they were executed. For while it united the ridiculous with the horrible, by the strangeness of its processions it amused people's eyes, weakening the sympathies by rousing Opposition, and in mocking and contempt it drowned all pity The criminal was led to the place of execution with proud pompousness, a blood-red flag waving at the head of the procession, which was accompanied with the tolling of the church bells, then followed priests clad in mass garments si 1ging psalms. After them followed the condemned wretch, clothed m a yellow robe, on which were painted images of black devils. On his head he wore a paper cap, which ended in a human figure, about which played flames of fire, and horrible demons flying about. Turned away from the (supposed) eternally damned wretch the crucifix was borne, salvation was worth nothing to him. To the fire belonged his mortal body, as to the flames of hell did his immortal soul. A gag stopped his mouth, preventing him from expressing his pains by cries, so thatno pity for him could be awakened in the bystanders, and in order that he could not tell any of the secrets of the holy court of judgment. After hirn followed the clergy in their festal robes, the authorities and the nobility the fathers (monks) who had tried him closed the pompous train.
