In this timely and significant book, an eminent scholar recounts the history of modern and contemporary Lebanon-a history marked by continuing strife and tragedy. A judicious account of Lebanon's sustained domestic conflict, this book analyzes the exacerbating effects that foreign intervention and occupation have had on the Lebanese political order. Itamar Rabinovich opens with a chapter explaining the paradoxical nature of the Lebanese state. He follows the events of a particularly important twelve-year period through four distinct stages: the collapse of the Lebanese political system between 1970 and 1975; the civil war of 1975-1976; the lingering crisis of the years 1976-1982; and the war of 1982. Bringing the story up to date, he devotes a chapter and a postscript to events since September 1982. Grounding his interpretation and narrative firmly in a historical perspective, Rabinovich provides an unbiased treatment of the perceptions and intentions of the participants—a rarity in books on this subject. He sorts out the rich mix of domestic, regional, and international political figures and uses a variety of Arab and Israeli sources to clarify military moves, political ties, and diplomatic initiatives. The author offers a thorough review of the internecine rivalries between different religious groups, political factions, economic interests, and the international allies and opponents with longstanding stakes in Lebanon. His explanation of the delicate balancing and counterbalancing required of any Lebanese regime trying to establish order between these antagonistic elements helps to clarify the basic causes of the current crisis. Writing from a solid background in modern Middle Eastern studies, Rabinovich successfully delineates the interplay between Lebanon's domestic unrest and the major problems that continue to plague the Middle East.

The war for Lebanon -- a conflict of domestic and external forces seeking to shape and control the Lebanese entity -- began long before 1970 and unfortunately did not end in 1983. But these years, the focus of this book, form a particularly significant phase in the history of both Lebanon and its immediate environment. The events of this period unfolded through 4 distinct stages: the collapse of the Lebanese political system between 1970 and 1975; the civil war of 1975-76; the lingering crisis of the years 1976-82; and the war of 1982. This book primarily explores the interplay between Lebanon's domestic politics and developments in the larger Middle East.

Israel's 34-day bombardment of Lebanon in the summer of 2006 demands international attention not only for its tragic results-the death of over 1,000 Lebanese civilians and the devastation of Lebanon's infrastructure and environment-but for its implications for all of the Middle East. What explains Hizballah's capture of two Israeli soldiers and the scale of Israel's retaliation? Why did the US reject an early cease-fire, instead encouraging Israel as Lebanese casualties mounted? Why did President Bush and Secretary of State Rice claim the Lebanese and the Arab world would welcome the "birth pangs" of a "new Middle East" designed by the US and Israel? And where will it all lead? Will Lebanon become a modern, non-sectarian state or will the confessional order be further entrenched?

Download Women’s War Stories Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Women have consistently been left out of the official writing of Lebanese history, and nowhere is this more obvious than in writing on the Lebanese Civil War. As more and more histories of the war begin to circulate, few include any in-depth discussion of the multiple roles women played in wartime Lebanon. Fewer still address the essential issues of women’s work and their creative production, such as literature, performance art, and filmmaking. Developed out of a larger oral history project collecting and archiving the ways in which women narrated their experiences of the Lebanese Civil War, this book focuses on a wide range of subjects, all framed as women telling their “war stories.” Each of the six chapters centers on women who worked or created art during the war, revealing, in their own words, the challenges, struggles, and resistance they faced during this tumultuous period of Lebanese history.

Pity the Nation will rank among the classics of war in our time, both as an historical document and as an eye-witness testament to human savagery. This epic account of the Lebanon conflict has now been brought up to date. In a new epilogue, Fisk, himself often at risk from the kidnappers of the warring factions, considers the rise and fall of General Aoun, the assassination of President Moawad, and the impact of the Gulf War on events in Beirut. He also recalls the release of the Western hostages, and presents unique information in the case of his friend, Terry Anderson.

"The 'War of the Mountain,' which the Lebanese commonly call 'harb al-jabal,' refers to the 1983 conflict in Mount Lebanon's Chouf and Aley regions. The conflict was another Syrian attempt to control Lebanon and one of the worst chapters in the 1975-1990 Lebanon War; it was also about the old and complex relationship between the Christians and the Druze, the two communities that were at the center of modern Lebanon's formation. After Israel entered Lebanon in 1982 to expel the Palestine Liberation Organization, three military forces became present on the same ground in Chouf and Aley: the Israeli army, the (Druze) Progressive Socialist Party led by Walid Junblatt, and the (Christian) Lebanese Forces whose troops in Chouf and Aley were led by Samir Geagea. This book is an edited translation of 'Al-Jabal, Haqiqa la Tarham' written in Arabic by Paul Andary, a former Lebanese Forces military official who participated in that conflict and wrote the horrendous story of what happened from its historical, political, military, and human aspects." -- Cover
