"It all began very innocently. Truly." The Year is 1883 and Emma M. Lion has returned to her London neighborhood of St. Crispian's. But Emma's plans for a charmed and studious life are sabotaged by her eccentric Cousin Archibald, her formidable Aunt Eugenia, and the slightly odd denizens of St. Crispian's. Emma M. Lion offers up her Unselected Journals, however self-incriminating they may be, which comprise a series of novella-length volumes. Armed with wit and a sideways amusement, Emma documents the curious realities of her life at Lapis Lazuli House.

The Mary Poppins that many people know of today--a stern, but sweet, loveable, and reassuring British nanny--is a far cry from the character created by Pamela Lyndon Travers in the 1930's. Instead, this is the Mary Poppins reinvented by Disney in the eponymous movie. This book sheds light on the original Mary Poppins, Myth, Symbol, and Meaning in Mary Poppins is the only full-length study that covers all the Mary Poppins books, exposing just how subversive the pre-Disney Mary Poppins character truly was. Drawing important parallels between the character and the life of her creator, who worked as a governess herself, Grilli reveals the ways in which Mary Poppins came to unsettle the rigid and rigorous rules of Victorian and Edwardian society that most governesses embodied, taught, and passed on to their charges.

Melville's story is that of the young neophyte's quest for a distinctive hero in his own image and of that hero's pursuit of ultimate knowledge and authority. The controlling theme, basic to American literature, is that of the necessary fall, the innocent's emergence into manhood by means of a literal ordeal that offers, in all its pain and difficulty, important perceptions into the nature of the world. The first, and decisive, discovery is mortality. Only by confronting the fact that he will die, recognizing, as Melville often put it, the universal sentence of annihilation, does a boy become a man. Testing that perception, probing ever deeper into the mystery of things, asking questions of the meaning of annihilation as well as of its agent, man becomes a potential hero. The fullest understanding causes, inevitably, the greatest pain. Few penetrate the deepest mystery of things, and those who do are Melville's heroes.

Heaven knows how I thought of a mouse on a tricycle -it's just there in one of my notebooks somewhere. Of course the point is not it, but the range of reactions of the onlookers. A bit more theatre. In recent years I have found myself working increasingly in sequences of drawings which explore subjects and techniques which interest me. These sequences are the origins of the QB Papers; they vary in approach and tone, and between reality and fantasy. But I hope that in each of them in its own way will appeal to anyone who likes looking at drawings.' - Quentin Blake
