Excerpt from The Universal Medical Journal, Vol. 11: A Monthly Magazine of the Progress of Every Branch of Medicine in All Parts of the World; (Companion Publication to the "Annual of the Universal Medical Sciences"); January, 1897 Either the diagnosis was very bad or the therapy was murderous. He had been studying the health reports of the State of Michigan since 1886, and had noticed that, at first, many cases of typhoid and typho-malarial fever were reported, but gradually, year by year, the typho-malarial cases had been disappearing, while the malarial and the typhoid cases were slightly increasing. He said that the State Board of Health of Maryland would shortly make a complete investigation to ascertain the sanitary conditions in reference to typhoid in Maryland, and letters would be written to every physician in the State. This would be the happiest and most profitable investment Maryland ever made. If we could place with the board of experts enough money to make a substantial beginning of the reform, its members would realize the possibilities that Dr. Osler had maintained. Excerpt from Annual of the Universal Medical Sciences, 1889, Vol. 5: A Yearly Report of the Progress of the General Sanitary Sciences Throughout the World BY way of preface to the notes on General Therapeutics for the year 1888, I can but repeat what was said in beginning the same subject in the last volume of the annual, that the omission of reference to any important therapeutical papers found in the journals during the year is to be explained by the fact. That these articles have been given into the hands Of editor of other depart ments, and references to them should be sought for there. The number of ournal articles handed me has been enormous - so great, in fact, that I have been obliged to condense remarks upon them as far as possible. In order to do this, and to avoid duplicating subject-matter, an arrangement has been made with the editor of the department of Experimental Therapeutics, by which all botan ical and chemical matters, including the description of drugs, etc., have been referred to him, and the department of General Thera peutics confined strictly to the clinical application of medicines, including some remarks on food and water. Excerpt from The Universal Medical Journal, 1894, Vol. 2: A Monthly Magazine of the Progress of Every Branch of Medicine in All Parts of the World Dr. Sottas, speaking of retrograde degeneration of the anterior pyra mids, remarked that in four cases of transverse lesions of the Spinal cord, of syphilitic origin, in which. He had had occasion to observe, he had found, together with the classic secondary degeneration, an ascending degeneration of the anterior pyramids. This does not appear to be connected with a destructive process of the funicular cells of the gray substance, but with a retrograde degeneration - a fact already supported by experimental anatomy. Dr. Henry fraenkel reports some experiments upon animals, in which, after the injection of urine into the veins, he has observed in certain cases that some urines possess antidiuretic properties. Excerpt from The Universal Medical Journal, Vol. 4: January, 1896 Dr. Mcweeney, in replying, stated that in both of his cases the tumor originated in the lower end of the kidney. Because adenomata occurred in a cirrhosed kidney, it did not follow that they were caused by it. The fully-formed tissue of these tumors is not like that of urinary tubules. In the cortex of the human suprarenal tissue, but more especially in that of the higher mammals, pseudotubular structures of the same kind had been found by Creighton, Marchand, and others - Medical Press and Circular, December 25, 1895.
