Excerpt from America and the World War This is not right. It is not just to the weaker nations of the earth. It comes perilously near a betrayal of our own interests. In his laudable anxiety to make himself acceptable as a mediator to England, and especially to Germany, President Wilson loses sight of the fact that his first duty is to the United States; and, moreover, desirable though it is that his conduct should commend him to Germany, to England, and to the other great contending powers, he should not for this reason forget the interests of the small nations, and above all of Belgium, whose grati tude can never mean anything tangible to him or to us, but which has suffered a wrong that in any peace negotiations it Should be our first duty to see remedied. Excerpt from The Betrayal of the Peoples It was open to the Allies to reject the proposed basis. But they accepted it, and having done so they are under a moral obligation to keep their solemn pledges. Two preliminary points must be noted before we examine the Treaty in detail. One is, that the Allied and Associated Govern ments are now dealing with the German people. They have always contended that their quarrel was with the rulers. We have no quarrel with the German people, said President Wilson after the American declaration of war against Germany. It was not upon their impulse that their Government acted in entering this war. It was not with their previous knowledge or approval. That people have now overthrown their autocratic and militarist rulers. The Emperor has abdicated, and the reigning dynasties have fallen. Secondly, whatever the merits or demerits of the Treaty may be, it is important to realise that it has been framed in secret. Not only the enemy, but the Allied and Associated peoples, have been excluded from any part in the process of making peace; ofdeciding, that is, upon the uses to which their colossal sacrifices were to be put. Even among the Allied Governments only a small inner ring has had a voice in the private conclave which drew up the Treaty. It is not one of those open covenants of peace, openly arrived at, which President Wilson promised. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Imperiled America: A Discussion of the Complications Forced Upon the United States by the World War At a time when high government officials and eminent statesmen are demanding that the country be prepared against war, it is important for the people to be informed of the causes moving them. In the following pages I have tried as an American proud of his birthright and jealous of the honor and integrity of his country, to set forth our perilous situation in a world at war. I have refrained purposely from excessive detail, and present the facts in a fashion which I hope will bring home to those who read what I have written our actual points of international contact and international conflict. It is true to-day as in past ages that "in union there is strength." Above all things, the American people must be united. Excerpt from Why the United States of America Entered the War I have called the Congress into extraordinary session because there are serious, very serious, choices of policy to be made, and made immediately, which it was neither right nor constitutionally per missible that I should assume the responsibility of making. On the third of February last I officially laid before you the extraordinary announcement of the Imperial German Government that on and after the first day of February it was its purpose to put aside all restraints of law or of humanity and use its sub marines to sink every vessel that sought to approach either the ports of Great Britain and Ireland or the western coasts of Europe, or any of the ports con trolled by the enemies o'f Germany within the Medi terranean. Herbert Hoover's "magnum opus"—at last published nearly fifty years after its completion—offers a revisionist reexamination of World War II and its cold war aftermath and a sweeping indictment of the "lost statesmanship" of Franklin Roosevelt. Hoover offers his frank evaluation of Roosevelt's foreign policies before Pearl Harbor and policies during the war, as well as an examination of the war's consequences, including the expansion of the Soviet empire at war's end and the eruption of the cold war against the Communists.
