Strengthening Your Child's R.Q. As parents and educators we seek to help our children develop socially in healthy ways. The R.Q. is the "Relational Quotient" of a person; revealing how well they relate to extra-grace- needed people. "The Tortoise and the Hair" is a parable of what a healthy R.Q. might look like. The story of Tully the Tortoise is fun to read and naturally leads into a discussion of how to be socially attune to children that are different, and how to reach out to them. "Your best friend may be the turtle next door. Bible truth in modern fable." --Leith Anderson, President, National Association of Evangelicals, Washington, DC "Communications between children and adults require patience, care and skill and aids to this noble and necessary aspect of life are more than welcome. In this regard we warmly recommend Dietrich Schindler's colorful, charming and creative book." --Stuart and Jill Briscoe, authors.

Download Queen of the Turtle Derby and Other Southern Phenomena Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
In classic Dixie storytelling fashion, with a rare blend of literary elegance and plainspoken humor, the inimitably charming, staunchly Southern Julia Reed wends her way below the Mason-Dixon line and observes many phenomena– from politics, religion, and women to weather, guns, and what she calls “drinking and other Southern pursuits.” To hear Reed tell it, the South is another country. She builds an entertaining and persuasive case, using as examples everything from its unfathomable codes of conduct to its disciplined fashion sense. And then there is Southern food, which is an entire world apart: Gumbo, grits, greens, and, of course, fried chicken make memorable appearances in Reed’s essays, which will amuse, delight, and even explain a thing or two to baffled Yankees everywhere.

In the past 5 years there has been an enormous increase of evidence that the ion channels activated by mechanical force are common to a wide variety of cell types. Mechanosensitive (MS) ion channels form a small proportion of the total channel population. They are now found in more than 30 cell types from E. coli, yeast, to plant, invertebrate, and vertebrate cells, where they occur in virtually all types of cells from bone to smooth muscle, as well as neurons. The majority of MS channels are permeable to monovalent cations and are slightly selective for K+ over Na +. How 2 ever, there are several reports of anion-selective MS channels, MS Ca + channels, and MS channels with large conductances that do not dis criminate markedly between cations and anions. Recently B. Hille has postulated possible evolutionary relationships between several types of ion channels, with mechanosensitive channels predating even the eukaryotes. Two voltage-gated channel types originate with the stem eukaryotes, as deduced from the presence of voltage-gated K+ 2 and Ca + channels in protozoa, algae, or higher plants. Agonist-gated chan nels as well as voltage-gated Na + channels appear with the earliest metazoan animals, as deduced from the presence of Na + spikes and fast chemical synapses in cnidaria (coelenterates), ctenophores, and all higher animals.
