Excerpt from The Telephone Hand-Book This little book has no pretension to be considered a complete treatise on telephony as it exists in America. The time for such a work is not yet come. But it is felt that there is a demand for a practical book on telephone working and management, and The Telephone Hand-Book is an attempt at meeting that demand. With the exception of a few chapters dealing with certain forms of transmitters and receivers used in Europe, which are given for the information of those who are unfamiliar with other types of instruments than those used in this country, the book is based entirely on standard American practice; and most of the material, apparatus and methods described are peculiar to or have originated in this country. With the illustrations no time nor trouble has been spared to make them clear and intelligible, and of real service to the reader. The great majority of them have been executed especially for the book; quite a number have never been published before, others have appeared in the Electrical Engineer and Electrical Review, generally in connection with my own articles. These latter have been re-drawn from the original material wherever possible. As this is the first practical book on American telephone methods, sins of commission and omission will no doubt be met with in its pages. Any suggestions or corrections, which may be addressed to the care of the publishers, will be received in a spirit of due modesty and thankfulness. Excerpt from A Manual of Telephony In November, 1888, was published one of the volumes of the Specialists Series, entitled The Telephone, the authors being W.H. Preece and Julius Maier, Ph.D. The reception extended to this work was of the most gratifying character; but the rapid strides made in practical telephony since that time, together with the fact that Dr. Maiers services were no longer available, led to the decision that the original volume should not be re-issued, but should be replaced by the present work. We desire here to recognise and acknowledge the use that we have made of Dr. Maiers previous labours, particularly in connection with the earlier portions of this book, which deal principally with historical telephony. No slight difficulty has been experienced in determining what information should be given and what excluded. As, on the one hand a minute and particular description of all conditions is unnecessary for the experienced specialist; so, on tlie other hand, the neglect of minor details may lead to very great inconvenience to others who, in isolated districts, wish to avail themselves of the fruits of the labours of their more favoured colleagues. We have spared no pains to secure such due proportion in the descriptions of the various apparatus and systems as shall meet the wants of both these classes. Excerpt from American Telephone Practice That a third edition of this work should have been called for within three months after the appearance of the first is indeed gratifying. The time since the second edition was exhausted has been utilized in making many changes in the matter already presented, and in the preparation of much new matter, all of which it is thought will make the work more valuable as a guide and general reference-book in practical telephony. The chapter on Automatic Exchanges has been written because the book seemed incomplete without it. If it is here. After criticised for containing no descriptions of practical appa ratus, my plea will be that it is mainly the fault of the subject. That very important factor in modern telephony, the storage battery, was certainly very inadequately handled in the first edi tion. Chapter XXXV. Is intended to remedy this. The last chapter, on Specifications, is given as a help rather than as an inflexible guide to those drawing specifications. The specifications given represent modern practice, but they are not meant to serve in the place of common sense or of engineering ability. Excerpt from The Telephone System of the British Post Office: A Practical Handbook The primary Object Of the articles was to describe in detail the trunk system; but it was considered desirable to give some account of first principles, and accordingly the transmission of speech, transmitters, receivers, and, in fact, telephone stations generally, were briefly described. The writer is aware that much of this has been described times without number, but his experience as a teacher leads him to believe that the inclusion of this matter will render the book useful to a larger circle of readers. The first eight chapters may be said to be introductory to the subject of telephony generally. The permanent current systems nextly receive attention, and their various classes of switch sections. After this follow special switches, such as transfer boards, record table switch sections, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Telephone The task which we have set ourselves in the present book of giving a detailed and reliable account of the present state of Telephony has been no easy one; since it was a question how, on the one hand, to describe a number of installations and apparatus which had not yet found their way into publicity, and oh the other hand, to select from many proposed systems and arrangements those only which had been found practically useful.
