Much of the literature is anecdotal with patterns of elements identified as necessary for success. Inconsistences exist within the literature reviewed that complicate decisions related to capital campaign planning. With little empirical research and data available to support the anecdotal evidence, capital campaign planners must carefully examine each element on its own merits within a weighted framework to assess the probable influence each element will have on a campaign's success. The review indicates that additional empirical research on capital campaigns is necessary to establish new best practices and improve the likelihood of success.
