A statistical investigation of the fatigue crack propagation process was conducted. Sixty-eight replicate constant amplitude crack propagation tests were conducted on 2024-T3 aluminum alloy. The following distributions were considered: two-parameter normal distribution, three-parameter log-normal distribution, three-parameter Weibull distribution, two-parameter gamma distribution, three-parameter gamma distribution, the generalized three- parameter gamma distribution, and the generalized four-parameter gamma distribution. From the experimental data, the distribution of N as a function of crack length was best represented by the three-parameter log-normal distribution. Six growth rate calculation methods were investigated and the method which introduced the least amount of error into the growth rate data was found to be a modified secant method. Based on the distribution of da/dN, which varied moderately as a function of crack length, replicate a vs. N data were predicted. This predicted data reproduced the mean behavior but not the variant behavior of the actual a vs. N data.

Download A Unified Statistical Methodology for Modeling Fatigue Damage Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This book is an attempt to provide a uni?ed methodology to derive models for fatigue life. This includes S-N, ?-N and crack propagation models. This is not a conventional book aimed at describing the fatigue fundamentals, but rather a book in which the basic models of the three main fatigue approaches, the stress-based, the strain-based and the fracture mechanics approaches, are contemplated from a novel and integrated point of view. On the other hand, as an alternative to the preferential attention paid to deterministic models based on the physical, phenomenological and empirical description of fatigue, their probabilistic nature is emphasized in this book, in which stochastic fatigue and crack growth models are presented. This book is the result of a long period of close collaborationbetween its two authors who, although of di?erent backgrounds, mathematical and mechanical, both have a strong sense of engineering with respect to the fatigue problem. When the authors of this book ?rst approached the fatigue ?eld in 1982 (twenty six years ago), they found the following scenario: 1. Linear, bilinear or trilinear models were frequently proposed by relevant laboratoriesandacademiccenterstoreproducetheW ̈ ohler?eld. Thiswas the case of well known institutions, which justi?ed these models based on clientrequirementsorpreferences. Thisledtotheinclusionofsuchmodels and methods as, for example, the up-and-down, in standards and o?cial practical directives (ASTM, Euronorm, etc.), which have proved to be unfortunate.

Download Investigation of Statistical Nature of Fatigue Properties Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Extensive fatigue tests were made on annealed Armco iron and plain carbon and alloy steels heat-treated to different strengths and microstructures. Statistics of fatigue-fracture curves and endurance limits were determined from the experimental data obtained and, for various other materials, from a survey of literature. The results were analyzed to show the relative effects of various metallurgical factors on the statistical nature of fatigue properties. Other phases of the problem studied include: dependence of statistical variation in fatigue life on stress level in the fracture range, statistics for location of crack initiation, size effect, understressing effect, and the form and method of plotting the S-N diagram.

Download Characterization of the Variability in Fatigue Crack Propagation Data Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
The variability in fatigue crack propagation is studied through the analysis of 68 sets of replica constant amplitude fatigue crack growth data. Each of the a versus N data sets are fit to the integral of a crack growth rate equation through a finite integral optimization routine. The routine determines the best fit crack growth parameters of the crack growth rate equation. Through characterization of the variability in the crack growth parameters and utilizing statistical theory, the variability in the a versus N data is predicted. The finite integral method of obtaining the crack growth parameters was shown to very accurately reproduce the a versus N data. The variability in the crack growth parameters showed a strong linear trend, and a regression analysis on the parameters provided information to accurately predict the variability in the fatigue crack propagation data.

Download Expert System for Fatigue Crack Growth Predictions Based on Fatigue Crack Closure Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This book demonstrates fatigue crack growth under random loading graphically. This state-of-the-art monograph introduces an expert system for crack growth predictions, particularly based on crack closure. The system is developed after years of research by the authors by using the Math-type software consisting of 5 parts. This system is unique as it is fundamentally different from previous systems as it focuses on fatigue crack growth predictions based on fatigue crack closure. This book can be a useful guide for practicing engineers, researchers, and students in the fields of mechanical, aerospace, or civil engineering.

Download Handbook of Fatigue Crack Propagation in Metallic Structures Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
The purpose of this Handbook is to provide a review of the knowledge and experiences in the field of fatigue fracture mechanics. It is well-known that engineering structures can fail due to cyclic loading. For instance, a cyclically time-varying loading reduces the structure strength and can provoke a fatigue failure consisting of three stages: (a) crack initiation (b) crack propagation and (c) catastrophic failure. Since last century many scientists have tried to understand the reasons for the above-mentioned failures and how to prevent them. This Handbook contains valuable contributions from leading experts within the international scientific community and covers many of the important problems associated with the fatigue phenomena in civil, mechanical and nuclear engineering.

Download Small Fatigue Cracks Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This book contains the fully peer-reviewed papers presented at the Third Engineering Foundation Conference on Small Fatigue Cracks, held under the chairmanship of K.S. Ravichandran and Y. Murakami during December 6-11, 1998, at the Turtle Bay Hilton, Oahu, Hawaii. This book presents a state-of-the-art description of the mechanics, mechanisms and applications of small fatigue cracks by most of the world's leading experts in this field. Topics ranging from the mechanisms of crack initiation, small crack behavior in metallic, intermetallic, ceramic and composite materials, experimental measurement, mechanistic and theoretical models, to the role of small cracks in fretting fatigue and the application of small crack results to the aging aircraft and high-cycle fatigue problems, are covered.
