This book provides a comprehensive and critical examination of the role of spiritual beings in the authentic Pauline epistles, the first work to give an exhaustive and systematic account in recent years. Contrary to the views of many scholars, that spirits are trivial or irrelevant within Paul's writings, this monograph argues that they are inherent features of the letters. Read within their historical and cultural context, the epistles can be seen to participate in widely held assumptions about the role and influence of spiritual powers. This argument allows for a fresh perspective on a neglected theme, allowing for a re-evaluation of aspects of Paul's letters. Part One sets out the problems of interpreting the spirit world, with reference to the agendas of modern scholars and ancient readers. Part Two then examines angelology and demonology, progressing through the main inhabitants of the Pauline spirit world: angels, Satan, demons, powers, etc. Finally, Part Three sets out the key thrust of the argument: the spirit world may be regarded as inherent in the letters because it is integrated into major Pauline themes. This thesis is put forward by analysing the role played by spirits in helping to shape three areas of concern for Paul: his Christology, soteriology, and sense of community. Such an integrated approach yields a new way of perceiving the place and importance of spirits, not as a major or minor doctrine but as an axiomatic and cultural idiom in the Pauline texts.

At the start of the gay rights movement in 1969, evangelicalism's leading voices cast a vision for gay people who turn to Jesus. It was C.S. Lewis, Billy Graham, Francis Schaeffer and John Stott who were among the most respected leaders within theologically orthodox Protestantism. We see with them a positive pastoral approach toward gay people, an approach that viewed homosexuality as a fallen condition experienced by some Christians who needed care more than cure. With the birth and rise of the ex-gay movement, the focus shifted from care to cure. As a result, there are an estimated 700,000 people alive today who underwent conversion therapy in the United States alone. Many of these patients were treated by faith-based, testimony-driven parachurch ministries centered on the ex-gay script. Despite the best of intentions, the movement ended with very troubling results. Yet the ex-gay movement died not because it had the wrong sex ethic. It died because it was founded on a practice that diminished the beauty of the gospel. Yet even after the closure of the ex-gay umbrella organization Exodus International in 2013, the ex-gay script continues to walk about as the undead among us, pressuring people like me to say, "I used to be gay, but I'm not gay anymore. Now I'm just same-sex attracted." For orthodox Christians, the way forward is a path back to where we were forty years ago. It is time again to focus with our Neo-Evangelical fathers on care--not cure--for our non-straight sisters and brothers who are living lives of costly obedience to Jesus. Lakey builds upon Clifford Geertz's systemic understanding of religion by showing how, for Paul, Baptism and the Lord's Supper facilitate specific connections between his metaphysics on the one hand, and the form or pattern of life he enjoins upon his churches on the other. This volume considers precisely what - given his theological and ethical premises - Paul's underlying beliefs regarding these ritual events may have been, allowing for a preliminary discussion of specific lines of post-interpretation in the early patristic period.
