"The Ship of Ishtar" is a universally hailed as a classic of the fantasy novel genre. Merritt's writings were heavily influenced by H. Rider Haggard and Gertrude Barrows Bennett (writing as Francis Stevens), with Merritt having "emulated Bennett's earlier style and themes." What sets Merritt apart from the typical pulp author, however, is his lush, florid prose style and his exhaustive, at times exhausting, penchant for adjective-laden detail.

The Ship of Ishtar, a universally hailed classic of the fantasy novel by A. Merritt.Abraham Grace Merritt (January 20, 1884-August 21, 1943) - known by his byline, A. Merritt's stories typically revolve around conventional pulp magazine themes: lost civilizations, hideous monsters, etc. His heroes are gallant Irishmen or Scandinavians, his villains treacherous Germans or Russians (in accordance with the politics of the time) and his heroines often virginal, mysterious and scantily clad. What sets Merritt apart from the typical pulp author, however, is his lush, florid prose style and his exhaustive, at times exhausting, penchant for adjective-laden detail. Merritt's fondness for micro-description nicely complements the pointillistic style of Bok's illustrations, and often serves to highlight and radicalize the inherent fetishistic tendencies of pulp Sci Fi.

Abraham Grace Merritt was born on January 20, 1884 in Beverly, New Jersey. He was originally steered towards a career in law but this later diverted to journalism. It was an industry where he would excel. Eventually he would edit The American Weekly but even from his early years he was remarkably well paid. Merritt was also an avid hobbyist and loved to make collections of his interests and, of course, also found time to write. As a writer Merritt was undeniably pulp fiction and heavily into supernatural. He first published in 1917 with Through the Dragon Glass. Many short stories followed including novels that were published whole as well as serialized. His stories would typically take on board the conventional pulp magazine themes: lost civilizations, hideous monsters and their ilk. His heroes were almost always brave, adventurous Irishmen or Scandinavians, whilst his villains were usually treacherous Germans or Russians and his heroines often virginal, mysterious and, of course, scantily clad. Many pulp fiction writers had a terse, spare style that never got in the way of plot but Merritt was more considered. His style was lush, florid and full of adjective laden detail. He was, in essence, a remarkable talent.

The goddess of love and beauty was adrift on an enchanted ocean in a magic world. The myriad forces of satanic evil plagued the vessel of the red-haired, passionate goddess. Only one man, John Kenton, the American adventurer, WWI vet and archaeologist, could save Ishtar's priestess from the black magic which divides her world from ours. Written in 1924, ,,The Ship of Ishtar" is a universally hailed classic of the fantasy novel by A. Merritt and is, on surface at least, an obvious early product of Pulp's Golden Age. Merritt was influential upon the science fiction and fantasy world primarily through the imaginative power he displayed in the creation of desirable alternative worlds and realities.

A classic of fantasy that transports the reader back sixty centuries to mystery and romance beyond compare. The hero, John Kenton, received a queer block unearthed in the ruins of Ancient Babylon. It is inscribed with a record of Sargon of Akkad. An unaccountable conviction possesses Kenton that the stone imprisons some hidden wonder. He strikes it--and as it disintegrates, a miniature craft of elfin enchantment burgeons forth. And as the motes from the cloud of dust envelop him he undergoes a metamorphosis; is projected onto The Ship, where he encounters Sharane--willow-lithe, flame-slender . . . goddess, temptress, woman. The ensuing adventures in the long and long ago cast a thrall over the reader with their vivid action and unparalleded beauty. A novel limned in lapis lazuli, that will hold you ensorcelled with the word wizardry and evocative imagery of A. Merritt, the Lord of Fantasy.
