The Scarlet Letter caused quite a stir when it first appeared in February, 1850. The initial printing of 2,500 volumes sold out within ten days. It was one of the first mass-produced books in America and was widely read and discussed to an extent not much experienced in the young country up until that time. The Scarlet Letter - Original February 1850 Uncensored Version is the first incarnation of the book, before Hawthorne added a preface to a second edition of The Scarlet Letter which was published a month later. The story tells of Hester Prynne, condemned to wear the red letter A on her breast, as punishment for adultery - and because she resists all attempts of the Boston clergy to make her reveal the name of her child's father. Prynne's husband, an old physician who had remained in Europe, arrives in America to see her on the pillory. Assuming the name of Roger Chillingworth, he decides to seek revenge.

"We dream in our waking moments, and walk in our sleep." --- Nathaniel Hawthorne, The Scarlet Letter The story begins in seventeenth-century Salem, Massachusetts, then a Puritan settlement. A young woman, Hester Prynne, is led from the town prison with her infant daughter, Pearl, in her arms and the scarlet letter "A" on her breast. The scarlet letter "A" represents the act of adultery that she has committed; it is to be a symbol of her sin for all to see. She will not reveal her lover's identity, however, and the scarlet letter, along with her public shaming, is her punishment for her sin and her secrecy.

Rather than taking words directly from a dictionary and studying them, SAT Words from Literature presents vocabulary words that are found in classic literature in their original context. In this way, you will get a clear understanding of what the word can do in a sentence, what it might mean, and how it is used. Each vocabulary word is highlighted in the text and also reproduced in bold on the facing page, followed by the part of speech as it is used in the book, the pronunciation, an appropriate definition, and a synonym or antonym if applicable. Exercises that test your understanding of the vocabulary words are included at the end of the book. To make the exercises more manageable, words are arranged by chapters, or sections, so that there are not too many words in any one group. With this painless approach to learning vocabulary, you can boost your chances of acing the SAT.

Teachers have long understood that grasping the themes of great literature, while often times challenging, is well within the means of those readers willing to thoughtfully engage the text. Furthermore, teachers have long understood the value of margin notes as a powerful tool in accomplishing this end. Yet despite the collective wisdom of many educators, publishers continue to print the classics in a format little conducive to the kind of "text-grappling" that experts recommended. In listening to students and educators, Gladius Books has heeded the call by publishing a series of the most frequently read classics, each printed with extra-wide margins for convenient annotations. To maximize the value of margin notes, the publisher has also included an appendix with helpful note-taking suggestions.
