In this condition God was pleafed to continue me about five months from home; where, being able for nothing elfe, I went on with this work, which lengthened to this which you here fee. It is no wonder, therefore, if I be too abrupt in the beginning, feeing I then intended but the length of a fermon or two. Much. Lefs may you wonder if the whole be very imperfeet, feeing it was written as it were with one foot in the grave, by a man that was betwixt the living and the dead, who wanted firength of na ture to quicken invention or afi'eetion, and had no hook but his Bible, till the chief part' was finifh ed. But 0 how fweet is this providence now to my review! Which fo happily forced me to that work of meditation, whichi had formerly found fo profitable to my foul! Excerpt from The Saints' Everlasting Rest, or a Treatise on the Blessed State of the Saints in Their Enjoyment of God in Heaven Nor is it less observable, that Mr. Baxter himself taking notice in a paper found in his study after his death, what numbers of persons were converted by reading his Call to the Unconverted, accounts of which he had received by letter every week, expressly adds, This little book [the Call to the Unconverted] God hath blessed with unexpected success, beyond all that l have written, except the Saints' Rest. With an em dent reference to this book, and even during the life of the author, the pious Mr. Plavcl affectionately says, Mr. Baxter is almost in heaven; living in the daily views, and cheerful expectation, of the Saints' Ever lasting Rest with God; and is left for a little while among us, as a great example of the life of faith.
