The decision, in 1975, to write alone a monograph on micro tubules was not without risks. While I was familiar from its start in Brussels in 1934 with the work on col chicine and other mitotic poisons, the literature on microtubules was, 8 years ago, already increasing at an impressive rate. However, this monograph, which, contrary to other works on microtubules, tried to cover the whole field of research, from the fundamentals of the tubulin molecule and the possible role of these organelles in some aspects of human pathology, to some medical applications of microtubule poisons, has been accepted as a useful tool for workers in these fields. Since 1976, (date of the last references mentioned in the monograph) until the middle of 1983, papers on microtubule research have literally been pouring in, at the rate of several hundred a year. This may justify a second edition, although the considerable difficulties in keeping the size of the book within the same limits while not forgetting to mention some important work, could not be overlooked. The need for an entirely revised and rewritten edition prompted this new venture and was possible with the help of the considerable amount of reprints kindly sent to me day after day over the years. This work would have been unthinkable if the author had not maintained the same enthusiasm for microtubule research, which has been disclosing new facts every day.

There continues to be intense interest in the microtubule cytoskeleton; the assembly, structure and regulation of microtubules; and the numerous motors and accessory proteins that control cell cycle, dynamics, organization and transport. The field continues to grow and explore new aspects of these issues driven immensely by developments in optical imaging and tracking techniques. This Second Edition brings together current research and protocols in the field of microtubules in vitro and will serve as a valuable tool for cell biologists, biophysicists and pharmacologists who study the microtubule cytoskeleton, as well as for researchers in the biomedical and biotechnology communities with interest in developing drugs that target microtubules, MAPS and motors. Chapters reflect experimental procedures and new developments in the field of microtubule in vitro research Combines classical approaches and modern technologies Presents easy-to-use protocols and thorough background information, compiled by leaders in the field

Biological Functions of Microtubules and Related Structures is a compendium of papers presented at the 13th Oji International Seminar on The Biological Functions of Microtubules and Related Structures, held at Komaba Eminence in Tokyo in November, 1981. The papers discuss the molecular function of tubulin in various biological processes or events. The book is divided into six sections focusing on the various aspects of the functions and structures of microtubules -- the biochemistry and molecular biology of tubulin, including regulation of microtubule assembly; microtubule-dynein systems and other proteins in cell motility; microtubules and related proteins in mitosis; the interactions of cytoskeletal components; the cytoskeleton; and microtubules in membrane functions and transport. Biochemists, biologists, and molecular biologists will find the book interesting.

Microtubules reflects the enormous and significant advances in microtubule research of the past decade. It provides up-to-date information on the art of microtubule research, building on the success of Dr. Hyams's 1979 landmark text. A distinguished group of editors and contributors presents reviews dealing with three central topics: the biochemistry and assembly of the tubulin dimer; associated proteins and regulation of microtubule function; and microtubule organization and function in the cell.

The cytoskeleton is comprised of a variety of specialized proteins, and is a dynamic structure that is involved in the majority of key cellular events. There is increasing interest in the role of the cytoskeleton in human disease. This volume brings together human disease states where cytoskeletal disruptions are driving disease. Our emerging understanding of the molecular and cellular events that drive cytoskeletal mediated diseases including cancer, heart disease, myopathies and skin disorders, are also helping shape targeted therapeutic approaches to treating these diseases.
