Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 23: October, 1948 S it has been frequently commented on, both in verbal discussions and in the press, the Selective Service Act Of 1948 presents a new situation. The Selec tive Service Act of 1940, amended from time to time, under which this country Operated during the war, was enacted when war was raging in Asia and Europe. While this country was not then engaged, war was at our doors and that we should be drawn into it was inevitable. Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 21: January 1947 This compilation contains a brief foreword, an ex pression of appreciation of the generosity of Mr. J. E. Garland who made the work possible, and Of the kindness of some ladies who have aided in the task; the body of the narrative (142 pages); an appendix of twenty-four pages; an Index of five pages and a Bibliography of four pages. All this material is typewritten in double Spacing, except the quotations used, which are in single space type. The whole is fully documented; footnotes at the bottom of the pages give references to the authorities mentioned in the Bibliography; a different notation marks the notices in the Appendix, a collection of valuable material which even if standing alone would abundantly justify publi cation. Probably this is the author's opus magnum, though his facile pen has written through the years much history and biography of a high order of excellence. Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 23: July 1949 Owing to advancing years and impaired health, he discontinued his trade years ago and contented himself with the cultivation of his garden, which was always an excellent one, and doing chores about his home. He had also been a great hunter, and with a true and steady eye his aim seldom failed, and he brought down many a bird as it winged its way. This pastime also he had given up several years ago. George Rodgers was a man of the strictest integrity, and his word was as good as his bond. He was possessed with a most pleasing personality, and had many friends who delighted in his witty sayings, which sayings they often quoted. These friends find it difficult to realize that he is gone, and sorely miss his genial presence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 33: January 1959 In Paul Leicester Ford's edition Of The Works of Thomas Jefferson (volume VI, page 23) there may be found a letter containing the following intriguing words: Mr. Henry at the present session made an unsuccessful attempt to get a portion of the revenues of Wm. Mary transferred to hampden-sydney. The letter dated December 14, 1789, and addressed to William Short, shows to what lengths the early trustees went in order to insure the stability of the youthful institution! Our current efforts to procure funds are strenuous, but we assure our good friends in Williamsburg that we no longer have designs on them. Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 8: July, 1934 Moreover, many a boy who accepts a bid and joins a fraternity is not financially able to do so, and yet attaches such importance to being a fraternity man that he feels that he cannot decline. The result is that he either puts an additional burden on his parents, who may be making a great effort to give him an education, or else he leaves college in debt to his fraternity, thus impairing his sense of obligation and putting an additional charge on those who do pay their dues and contribute their part to the social demands made on the chapter. What would seem to be of greater importance to the fraternity itself is the fact that a number of boys whose breeding, ability, and promise would make them most desirable and congenial fraternity men and reflect credit on the fraternity, have to decline because they cannot afford the cost. Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 9: July, 1915 In fact, the condition of the gift is that the college will make this addition to the building. The library at present contains some thirty thousand volumes and pamphlets, many of. Them being of great value, but the great need is for other books which will supply the material needed for research work. The library is used more and more each year, from the beginning of the session to the close. A visitor during library hours will be astonished to see the great number of students working there. Some are there for the purpose of looking up assignments made by the professors, others for the independent preparation of speeches or articles for the various college publications. Still others use the library more or less as a study hall. Nothing is more greatly needed than better library facilities. One of the reasons which has prevented the college from being on the accredited list of American Universities and Colleges has been due to the fact that these facilities at hampden-sydney have not met the standard required by the Association. The hours which the library will be kept open will also be increased. It is believed that with this addition to the building, and after the purchase of these volumes, made possible by the gift of from the General Education Board, this particular disability will be removed. Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 9: October, 1934 The Chesters were Puritans of New England, people of strong bodies, vigorous minds and marked Spiritual gifts. The Chapters dealing with Dr. Chester's early life at Mount Holly, Arkansas, where he was born in 1851, present a vivid picture of the pioneer days in that state when there were few luxuries and life was strenuous; slavery as it existed then is shown at its best; war incidents are related, and the trials of Reconstruction days are referred to in a calm and impartial manner. College life at Washington College (lexington, Vir ginia) is portrayed' and the young student's association with General Robert E. Lee and his family is set forth in a most interesting way. Then hampden-sydney, as it was in the early seventies, receives the attention it deserves. The great worthies of the Seminary faculty are mentioned and just estimates of them are made. To the readers of the record this portion of the book will probably be most interesting. Even Walker Crawley is not forgotten, though the reference to this unique person is brief and not perhaps as laudatory as Walker would have wished it to be. It Should be stated, however, that the names of Hampden Sydney men are found all through the volume; for the contribution of the College to the work of missions has been great, and the Secretary came in contact with many of them.
