Excerpt from The Place-Names of Bedfordshire The Editor of the Bedfordshire Standard kindly granted me permission to send him, from time to time, during the year 1905, portions of a similar essay on The Place-names of Bedfordshire, which now appears in a revised form on which account I am indebted, for the third time, to the Cambridge Antiquarian Society. Excerpt from Place Names in Kent When I was a school boy at Canterbury, in the fifties and sixties, my first interest in philology was evoked by Trench on The Study of Words, and by the more elaborate pioneer work, Isaac Taylor's Words and Places, while oral instruction was afforded by the lectures of Dean Alford and the class teaching of my Headmaster, Mitchinson. All four of these leaders having been clergymen, it is perhaps fitting that, at a considerable distance, both of time and of ability, another cleric should attempt to localize some of their general teaching. Becoming aware in 1920 that there was no book dealing with the Place Names of Kent, such as has been produced by individuals or small committees in the case of some other counties, twenty in number; finding also by correspondence that McClure, the author of British Place Names in Their Historical Setting, says "Kent is one of the most difficult regions in England to trace its topographical history," I set to work to read all I could that bore upon the subject. Especially when laid up by an ailment, I read through twenty-six volumes of Arch cologia Cantiana, and found therein a productive quarry. Excerpt from Worcestershire Place Names Nearly all English place-names have their root in anglo-saxon the principal exceptions are rivers and hills, which frequently maintain their earlier names (especially large rivers), and then their construction is almost hopeless. On the west side of Severn a few names appear to be of Welsh origin (e. G. Malvern, Mathon, Pendock, Pensax, and should therefore be dealt with by a Welsh scholar. Before commencing my work I was of opinion that the Norsemen had left no permanent traces of their invasions in Worcestershire but I now think it pretty clear they made a settlement in the neighbourhood of Clent and Hagley, probably on one of their raids up Severn. The same thing happened in North Staffordshire, where several place-names and words are clearly of Danish origin. The anglo-saxons appear to have been a homely race, for their place-names have the simplest origins, very different to the Welsh, Irish, and Scotch, whose names largely savour of poetry, sentiment, and history. Excerpt from The Place-Names of Northumberland and Durham I. An attempt is made to deal with all names found in documents dating from before I 500, which can be identified on the modern map, and the study is, with some half dozen insignificant exceptions, rigidly confined to such. Books which deal with undocumented names on the same lines as documented ones stultify themselves and the newer methods of place-name study generally. Excerpt from The Place-Names of Decies Many - perhaps the majority - of townland and parish names possess an antiquity far greater than the present shape of the name would suggest. With a form as of yesterday the name has not unfrequently behind it the hoary antiquity of several centuries. From their occurrence in early deeds and charters we know that many townland and nearly all parish names go back to the Invasion, and undoubtedly a large proportion of these to a period consider ably more remote. Sub-denominations - i.e. Names of townland sub-divisions, roads, wells, fields &c. - are generally less ancient, but even of these a certain proportion is of great age. In hundreds of instances what are now merely townland sub-divisions were formerly independent townlands, and similarly there are townland names which formerly designated not merely the present townland but a district or manor embracing several plowlands.
