In 1940, as a young photographer working for Roy Stryker's Historical Section of the Farm Security Administration (FSA), Jack Delano traveled the length of the eastern seaboard recording the struggles of migrant workers still living in the shadow of the Depression. Late the following year, with the nation on the verge of war, Stryker sent him on a three-month assignment in Puerto Rico where the people he met radiated humor and generosity despite poverty worse than any he had seen in the continental United States. Back on the mainland, Delano traveled across the country photographing the homefront contributions of ethnic and minority groups and spent a month documenting the mobilized railroad system on freight trains between Chicago and California. After serving three years in the army, Delano settled in Puerto Rico, where for the last fifty years he has been a constant participant - as a photographer, filmmaker, television station director, book illustrator, cartoonist, and composer - in the island's cultural life.

Hartford Seen is the first modern-day art photography book focused exclusively on Connecticut's capital city. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Pablo Delano relocated from Manhattan to Hartford in 1996 to teach photography at Trinity College. On his daily drive to work, he was struck continually by the city's visual beauty and complexity. He left the car and began to explore, using his camera as a means of gaining a deeper understanding of what he found. In this personal meditation on Harford's built environment, Delano implements a methodical but intuitive approach, scrutinizing the layers of history embedded in the city's fabric. He documents commercial establishments, industrial sites, places of worship, and homes with a painter's eye to color and composition. His vision tends to eschew the city's better-known landmarks in favor of vernacular structures that reflect the tastes and needs of the city's diverse population at the dawn of the 21st Century. In the late 1980s, David Kahler was deeply inspired by seeing an exhibition of O. Winston Link photographs. He soon began making annual trips to the West Virginia and eastern Kentucky coalfields, destinations that strongly resonated with his own aesthetic of "place." Armed with a used Leica M6 and gritty Tri-X film, he and his wife made six week-long trips in the dead of winter to photograph trains along the Pocahontas Division of the Norfolk Southern Railway. Nearly one hundred images edited from this body of work form the core of The Railroad and the Art of Place, along with a selection of earlier Pennsylvania Railroad steam-era photographs that reflect Kahler's interest in the railroad landscape from an early age.
