Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, Vol. 74: January, 1950 N December 2, 1949, The Historical Society of Pennsylvania celebrated its one hundred and twenty-fifth birthday. In formulating the plans for this occasion, the Council of the Society felt that the more serious aspects of our work should be stressed, rather than the large functions and ceremonies that accom panied our One Hundredth Anniversary. A centennial is an appro priate time for such festivities, but this off-anniversary year called for a more practical celebration. The Council's main consideration, therefore, was to do something of more than passing interest, some thing that would focus attention on the Society's primary functions. Our F conders recognized these functions clearly, and incorporated them in the Charter of the Society by stating that our purpose was threefold: to collect, to preserve, to elucidate. Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, 1916, Vol. 40 A profound student of the history of Pennsylvania, particularly in the department of biography, he was one of the few who brought to the illumination of his work the taste and the knowledge of a collector of prints, manuscripts, autograph letters and pamphlets, and that accurate familiarity with the details of our development as a Commonwealth which such an ami able mania is sure to bestow. He exploited no theories, he defended no vagaries, he chased no rainbows, but reached his historical conclusions after cautious exami nation of the facts and a skilful and critical comparison of the most approved authorities. His views rested upon a basis which the majority of scholars would ac cept as sound and sane. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, Vol. 43 Among the Sons of Delaware who were most noted for patriotism during the Revolutionary struggle, Caesar Rodney and his brother Thomas stand in the front rank. Caesar is so well known as one of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence that no further mention of him is needed for the purposes of this paper. Thomas, his younger brother, was born in Sussex County, Delaware, on June 4, 1744. He received as good an education as could be had at that time in a small country town, and then prepared himself to enter the legal profession. He was a member of the Council of Safety of Delaware in 1775. On August 15,1777, he was appointed clerk of the Supreme Court of Delaware. He was Colonel of the Militia of his native State during part of the Revolutionary War, and rendered valuable service. In 1778 he was appointed Chief Justice of the Kent County Court. Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, Vol. 3 When the great lawyers of Maryland are enumerated, the first in the order of time and in eminence is Daniel Dulany. Then follow Samuel Chase, Luther Martin, William Pinckney, William Wirt, and Roger B. Taney; and now, the name of Reverdy Johnson, so recently dead, connects the eminent Maryland lawyers of the past with their successors, still living, who may become historical in their time. Of those here named, the biographer has materials far more ample than any which the most careful research can discover in regard to him whom tradition places before them all - a tradition so emphatic as to have justified the ablest of the historians of Maryland, himself a distinguished lawyer - McMahon - in his exalted eulogy.
