Excerpt from The Past, Present and Future of the Society of Friends In a measure of that love which would gather all from their outward wanderings in search of the living among the dead, to the inward life and saving power of Truth, I would affectionately call our attention to that living way wherein our worthy forefathers were led to blessedness and peace, as well as to some of the causes which have operated in producing our lapsed condition, as a religious people professing, above all others, a quiet waiting, and humble dependence upon the enlivening, enlightening power of divine grace; which, it is testified, hath appeared to all men, as their in* ward, spiritual teacher, monitor, and guide. It was their faithfulness to this essential duty of humble, dependent waiting upon God, that Christ his dear Son might be made unto them wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption, that made our worthy forefathers that mighty power for good, in turning men from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, which characterized them, as they truly were, the friends of truth; for they were united in the one faith, which works by love to the purifying of the heart, unto, and in co-operation with, the great and holy Head of the living church, who wrought m and through them, both to will and to do of his own good pleasure. Excerpt from The History of the Society of Friends in America, Vol. 1 It is true, that no inconsiderable portions of the valuable histories both of Sewel and Gough, have reference to the proceedings of Friends in America. The details, however, which these furnish are confined principally to the sufferings of some of their early members or ministers in New England, and to transactions of the Society within the limits of Penn sylvania and the Jerseys. The present work embraces a much wider field, and aims to exhibit a distinct history of each individual Yearly Meeting of Friends in America from its rise down to a period comparatively recent; The new and unpublished materials relating to the Society of Friends in the western world, which, under many favour able circumstances the writer has been enabled to collect from various sources on both sides of the Atlantic, together with an easy access to numerous printed works of ancient date and of great scarcity, have placed within his reach the means of effecting the object to a much larger extent than he could have anticipated. And here he desires to acknow ledge the kind and valuable assistance which he has derived both from meetings and individuals, in the readiness with which they have allowed him access to mss., including some. Thousands of letters of early Friends; with other important historical documents of more recent date. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The History of the Society of Friends in America, Vol. 1: Part 3 IN the previous chapters, much has been recorded that sullies the historic pages of Puritan New England. We have seen that its religious zealots, under cover of high spirituality, had con summated their persecutions in the murder of three individuals of unspotted lives and conversation, and of whom it may be justly said, The world was not worthy. Injustice and cruelty in any form afford a humiliating exhibition of the depravity of man but when presented to us under the mask of superior sanc tity, the mind is wont to turn with feelings of deepened abhorrence from such a desecration of the name of religion. In every reli gious profession, conscientious feelings should be respected, but the persecutions in Massachusetts violated even the plainest laws of humanity. The rulers of this province, in justification of their wicked acts, represented Friends as moving under extreme delu sion but what greater or more shocking delusion can there be. Excerpt from The Faith of a Quaker There arise also the insistent questions which beset all mystics, and which in Quakerism demanded a corporate, instead of an individual, answer. Was the light infallible? Was the claim to it an assumption of spiritual exaltation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Early Friends and Their Services in America: An Address Read Before the Friends Institute for Young Men, Philadelphia, Second Month 15, 1883 Two hundred and thirty-five years ago the Religious Society of Friends began to be known in England. Two hundred years ago this Province was first settled by William Penn. Of the latter event we have lately heard much, of the former but little 5 and yet the latter was so much the natural sequence of the former, that the history of the one is incomplete with out the history of the other. I propose, therefore, this evening to speak of three men, each of whom was prominent in the early history of the Society of Friends, and each of whom had somewhat to do with the settlement of Pennsylvania and its vicinity. I allude to George Fox, Robert Barclay and William Penn. I am well aware that to some who are present this account will have for them all the familiarity of a thrice-told tale. I cannot but believe that to others, and especially to the younger members of this Institute, there will be some facts mentioned which are new to them, and I am strong in the conviction that it will do no harm to any of us often to be reminded what manner of men they were to whom as Friends, and as Pennsylvanians, we owe so much. Excerpt from A History of the Friends in America The fact that the present edition has been printed from new type has afforded the opportunity to make many changes in the text, almost all of which, however, have been in the line of greater clearness and precision. All errors of whatever kind, have, so far known, been corrected, and a number of unintentional omissions have been remedied. The narrative has been brought up to date, and in every respect great pains have been taken to make the book still more worthy of the favor with which previous editions have been received. In this depart from the original plan of the work - that of presenting a short history, which, while giving what is essential to a clear understanding of the subject, makes no pretence or being exhaustive.
