Excerpt from The Opal: A Pure Gift for the Holy Days IN addressing an Annual to the taste of the religious and moral classes of society, the publisher of The Opal has two views to which his success will probably be referrible. He has thought it singular, in reflecting upon the manifest aim of ele gant literature, that so little of it should be expressly adapted to a class so much the largest and most respectable. The serious and thinking portion of this populous country, it is a matter of patriotic congratulation to be able to say, is by much the most numerous as well as the most refined; and, so high is the moral tone in society generally, that those who are not numbered among religious people, still desire, for their own reading, and that of their friends and families, books which, to say the least, can never offend the taste of the most scrupulous. It is in this class that the household affections are warmest, and that fitting tokens of remembrance and friendship are most looked for, at the season of the year consecrated to cheerfulness and good feeling, by the anniversary of the Saviour's birth. That there was no Annual, suited to this class and this particular want. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Opal: A Pure Gift for the Holy Days, 1845 The experiment of last year convinced the pub lisher that an Annual, prepared with reference to the true Christian standard, showing goodness in an agree able light, virtue in her sweet loveliness, and piety cheerfiilly promoting happiness, cannot fail of success. It is, therefore, with much pleasure that we present this second volume of the Opal to our friends, the moral and religious classes of society, because we trust, confidently, that it will meet their approbation.
