The Art and Thought of John La Farge: Picturing Authenticity in Gilded Age America offers an unprecedented portrait of one of the most celebrated artists of the Gilded Age and opens a window onto nineteenth-century American culture. The book reveals how the work of John La Farge contributed to a rich philosophical dialogue concerning the trustworthiness of human perception. In his struggle against a 'common truth' of iconic symbols presented by a new mass visual culture, La Farge developed a subversive approach to visual representation that focused attention not on the artwork itself, but on the complex, real encounter of artist, subject and medium from which the artwork came. Katie Kresser charts La Farge's efforts to assert his own reality - his own intrinsic uniqueness - in a postwar society that increasingly based personal identity on standardized vocational labels and economic productivity. La Farge's work is contrasted with that of Kenyon Cox, James Whistler and Henry Adams, all of whom (for La Farge) had fallen prey to the crass new visual environment - albeit in very different ways. This innovative study suggests that La Farge dealt with issues still relevant in a world characterized by ubiquitous mass media and the proliferation of 'normative' visions.

"Joos van Cleve (active 1505/08-1540/41), an accomplished and influential Netherlandish artist, and a superb technician and sensitive colorist, created some of the most attractive and endearing images in northern Renaissance painting. In this book - the first major study of Joos in nearly eighty years - the foremost authority on the artist provides a complete and up-to-date account of Joos's life and works." "John Hand discusses events in the artist's career, the increasing obscurity of his works in the centuries after his death, and their rediscovery in the nineteenth century. Hand then examines specific paintings in Joos's oeuvre, addressing a broad spectrum of topics concerning the artist's style, chronology, iconography, influences, and the wide range of his commission."--Jacket.

Carleton A. Coon, Sr., and Hoe L. Sanders formed the Coon-Sanders Orchestra in 1919 in Kansas City, Missouri. Three years later, under the name "Nighthawks," the band began broadcasting experimental, highly-popular midnight radio programs over Kansas City's WDAF. Their music was played all over the world, and the band remained one of America's top bands until Coon's death in 1932. Here is the complete history of the Coon-Sanders Orchestra, the band whose saucy, and bustling music and carefree and extravagant musicians symbolized the era between World War I and the Great Depression.
