Teaching outside the classroom improves pupils' engagement with learning as well as their health and wellbeing, but how can teachers link curriculum objectives effectively with enjoyable and motivating outdoor learning in Key Stage 1? The National Curriculum Outdoors: KS1 presents a series of photocopiable lesson plans that address each primary curriculum subject, whilst enriching pupils with the benefits of learning in the natural environment. Outdoor learning experts Sue Waite, Michelle Roberts and Deborah Lambert provide inspiration for primary teachers to use outdoor contexts as part of their everyday teaching and showcase how headteachers can embed curriculum teaching outside throughout the school, whilst protecting teaching time and maintaining high-quality teaching and performance standards. All of the Key Stage 1 curriculum lessons have been tried and tested successfully in schools and can be adapted and developed for school grounds and local natural environments. What's more, each scheme of work in this all-encompassing handbook includes primary curriculum objectives; intended learning outcomes; warm-up and main activities; plenary guidance; natural connections; ICT and PSHE links; and word banks.

Given the National Curriculum Council's failure to issue any formal guidance on the subject, multicultural education is becoming increasingly marginalized and left to individual schools. This book provides guidance and advice to schools on issues of racial equality and cultural diversity. It helps teachers, managers and governors implement the requirements and expectations of new educational legislation since the 1988 Education Reform Act and its associated non-statutory advice and guidance.; Within a whole school curriculum framework, chapters provide analysis and practical guidance for each subject area of the National Curriculum. With responsibility for multicultural education resting largely on individual schools, this book sets out to aid schools of all kinds, primary, secondary, grant maintained and LEA, to ensure that issues of racial equality and cultural diversity are addressed throughout the whole curriculum.; It is aimed at teachers at all levels, Heads of Education Departments, Mentors, Governors, Advisers, INSET course tutors, students on PGCE, BEd.MEd. courses and those doing a BA in Education.

A complete guide for trainees and teachers To prepare to teach the new Primary National Curriculum, you need more than just the Programmes of Study. You need a resource to help you understand, plan for, teach and assess the curriculum. This is it! Your guide to planning the Primary National Curriculum. This book explores how to plan in primary schools. It covers curriculum design and structure, challenges to learning, and how children learn. New in this edition is a piece on Decolonising the Curriculum. For each curriculum subject the programme of study is included, with notes to help you interpret it for your own class. The text covers how the teaching of each subject can be organised, assessment opportunities, key and essential resources in each subject, and how ICT can best be used in each subject to enhance teaching. Sequenced lesson examples in all subject chapters link theory to practice and highlight progression. The final section of the book explores the many ways in which the curriculum can be delivered. It includes the creative curriculum, dialogic teaching, cross-curricular learning and more current thinking about interpreting the curriculum.

The Committee for Children, Schools and Families recommends major changes to the nature and management of the national curriculum. In its current form the national curriculum essentially accounts for all the available teaching time, and the Committee would like to see a cap placed so that less than half that time is prescribed centrally. A slimmed-down national curriculum designed much more from the learner's perspective, setting out the learning that they have a right to access, is recommended. Parents should be provided with a copy of the national curriculum so that they can take on a greater role in overseeing the curriculum that their child experiences. The Committee is not convinced by the proposed Programmes of Study for the primary curriculum put forward in the interim report of the Rose Review (available at http://publications.teachernet.gov.uk), which seem unnecessarily complex, takes a similar view on the new secondary curriculum and is concerned at some of the Early Learning Goals specified in the Early Years Foundation Stage (there should be more emphasis at this stage on developing speaking, listening and social skills). All schools should have the freedoms in curriculum matters enjoyed by Academies, and should not be pressured to follow the non-statutory National Strategies guidance. The report also stresses the importance of empowering professional teachers rather than the current approach of prescription and direction. The coherence and continuity in the curriculum is another concern, with a history of piecemeal creation and amendment to frameworks from 0 to 19. The Committee recommends an independent curriculum authority be established to review and then keep the curriculum refreshed.
