After a short stay on Angel Island, in the bay across from San Francisco, I boarded the USS Tasker H. Bliss on October 4, 1941, along with a few hundred others. I learned, after we were at sea, we were probably headed for the Philippines. I had been assigned to the newly organized 680th Ordinance Company (Aviation Pursuit), US Army Air Force, and was headed for an area very close to war…more so than I had suspected. At night, it was lights out and no smoking on deck. This made me believe the war in Europe might be getting closer to home. We were being sent to the Philippines to assist the Filipino army that General Douglas MacArthur had been training to meet an expected Japanese invasion. MacArthur was sent to the Philippines by the US government in 1935 as a military advisor and in 1937 he was made the commander of all the armed forces in the Philippine islands. He realized the threat of an invasion by the Japanese, and he had desperately been trying to fortify the Philippines. He had pleaded for more money to build up the Filipino army and more troops from the US, but his request had been ignored until the Japanese began to invade Indochina.

Mountains have forever been steeped in poetry, symbolism and mystery, inspiring everyone from the explorers who wish to scale every peak to those who wish to walk in the valleys, ski the slopes or take in the crisp air and feel renewed once more. These rooftops of the world encourage us to see the bigger picture, appreciate the world around us and the sensations in our own bodies. The mountains offer clarity and a sense of 'getting away from it all' - they call to our wild side and are in many physical and mental ways good for us. The benefits of spending time at altitude include: Weight loss Improved heart health Reduced stress Improved the quality of sleep Improved immune function Encouraged physical fitness and activity Improved mental agility and creativity Improved mood Improved self-esteem, self-awareness and sense of wellbeing As the world's population becomes increasingly urbanised, the need for a healthy relationship with nature is more important than ever, both from a psychological wellbeing and physical health point of view. In the Mountains is an awe-inspiring book that takes us on a journey to reveal the health and wellbeing benefits of spending time at altitude and also teaches how we can be inspired by the research to bring elements of a mountain lifestyle into our everyday lives, from spending more time outdoors, walking on uneven ground whenever possible and enjoying the medicinal benefits of mountain herbs.

"Living in Paris for a winter and a spring and waking each morning to a view of Notre Dame, David Oates is led to revise his life story from one of trudging and occasional woe into one punctuated by nourishing and sometimes unsettling brilliance. In The Mountains of Paris, he offers a technique of reimagining one's life story that might be available to anyone. The present tense of the book takes place during the seasons he spends in Paris, sharing an artist's residency. It is a rare opportunity to consider what it means to be human, through time-stopping moments with music, art, and deep history. The past tense of the book offers memories that intrude into the bustle of Paris life: a Billy Graham crusade at age thirteen, a mountain pass, a love, a loss. In long years of mountaineering Oates fought the self-loathing which had infused him as the gay kid in the Baptist pew. In The Mountains of Paris, he ascends to a place of wonder through intense, personal narrative encounter with the strangeness of being alive. In his searching, luminous, and inimitable prose, Oates invites readers to share the sense of awe awakened by a Vermeer painting, or the night sky, or the echoing strains of music fading down a Paris street, lifting the curtain on a cosmos filled with a terrifying yet beautiful rightness"--

What Happens When Those Things that are Supposed to Comfort You—Don’t? When Shakuntala Rajagopal lost her husband of forty-seven years in 2010, she was devastated. A devout Hindu, she followed what she had learned since birth. Her family celebrated their beloved father, uncle, and mentor through the many rituals sending him off to his new life. Shakuntala even travelled to India to lovingly give her husband’s ashes to the oceans off the southern coast of India. As her husband’s last ashes floated away, Shaku felt her will to go on float away with him. At the age of seventy, she decided that she needed to revisit her own devout spirituality and take one of the more grueling but one of the most spiritual of all pilgrimages in India—the Char Dham—where she could bathe in the sacred waters of the River Ganges, Maa Ganga. She knew it would be her chance for a rebirth, a new beginning. But she almost doesn’t make it. Song of the Mountains: My Pilgrimage to Maa Ganga is a story of survival, changing and challenging any reader in the way he or she approaches major changes in life. Rajagopal’s story is one that will empower the reader to take action and go forward in their own life, whatever the circumstance they are facing.

The Faith That Moves Mountains: How to Have It, How to Use It, and How to Protect It is a Christian nonfiction book consisting of a theological reflection on Mark 11:2025. If you feel like you have a huge and intimidating mountain standing in front of you, if you feel like a huge wall prevents you from entering into your promised land, if you are currently facing a situation where you feel blocked from realizing your full potential and fulfilling your God-given destiny, this book is written for you. The purpose of the book is to reassure you that God has not forgotten you, even if it feels like so at times. That you have found yourself in precarious situations at one point or another in your life is not a result of Gods indifference toward you. This book reminds you that even before God brought you into this world, he made provisions in order for you to be able to deal with such circumstances. You must never lose sight of the fact that God loves you and his plan is not for the mountains of life to remain in your way forever without you being able to do something about it. In this book, I will teach you about the nature of the faith that moves mountains. I will try to explain the nature of that faithhow to have it, how to use it, and how to protect it. I want you to realize that you dont always have to put up with things that prevent you from moving forward in your life and toward your God-given destiny. I encourage you to keep this in mind: not knowing whether or not something negative is happening to you is part of how God is working in your life. You need to pray and make your desire known to God. As Gods servant, you never need to hide your frustration from him and shy away from letting the one who loves you know what you need. My prayer is that, after realizing how powerful faith in God is, you may put yours into good use. God did not put us in this world without carefully equipping us for every challenge we would face. God has not created us either as simple tools he can use whenever or for whatever he wants. Rather, God has made us acting beings able to do thingsand in fact the things which he himself does. God created us in his image and has made us his associates in looking after everything he created. Discover the power of faith in God, and triumph over the mountains of life.

In 2010, statistics report that one in five women and one in seventy-one men will be raped at some point in their lives. 51.1 percent of rape victims reported being raped by an intimate partner and 40.8 percent by an acquaintance. My heart goes out to the men and women who have survived sexual abuse. These statistics are unacceptable and unthinkable. Victims of sexual abuse can struggle with PTSD, shame, rage, fear, anxiety, and depression. This study was written as a result of counseling the survivors.Join us on our journey into healing that wound of sexual abuse. It matters not if it was two years or fifty years ago. The thing that matters is that you can bring it to Jesus. He alone can take what was meant to harm and destroy you and turn it around for good. This study is designed to be used individually, in groups, or with a counselor/mentor. You will come to understand that you are not alone and that you are loved. As you grieve what was done to you, God will release what He has for you.
