Scattered throughout the Central Highlands of South Vietnam is a group of people alternately called Montagnards, Highlanders and in some cases moi, the Vietnamese word meaning savage. Many American military advisors serving in the Highlands have worked with these people and the American public is vaguely aware of their existence through the televised war and a few vivid magazine articles highlighting their plight in the war. Most people hold the opinion that while the Montagnards are a kind, generous and hospitable people they are at the same time poor ignorant savages living in the jungle still practicing their stone age ways.
