Excerpt from The Modern Asphalt Pavement The Subsoil Base - As the foundation of a pavement, of any kind, is placed upon the soil and supported by the latter, it is a matter of vital importance that this latter support should be adequate, and it will only prove adequate if the subsoil is not subject to displacement from settlement or frost and is thoroughly drained. With sandy soils which are well compacted and which, from their nature, are well drained and dry there is no difficulty in the preparation of a satisfactory subgrade. Trenches in such soils, if they occur, can be solidly refilled with the aid of water. If the subgrade is a true sand, as in the neighborhood of seabeaches, it may be necessary, in order to compact the surface, to spread a course of gravel between the sand and the base in order to be able to roll it properly. Excerpt from Natural Rock Asphalts and Bitumens: Their Geology, History, Properties and Industrial Application The Writer takes this Opportunity of acknowledging his intense appreciation of the unstinted permission afforded him by Professor Clifford Richardson, of New York, to make reference to the contents of his well-known work, The Modern Asphalt Pavement in those parts of this present volume devoted to American bitumens. Nor can he conclude without expressing his deep sense of gratitude to Mr. H. W. Brant, of Newcastle-ou Tyne, by whom the matter dealing with the practical application of rock asphalt mastic has been almost entirely written. As the outcome of many years of close attention to the practical side of this industry, his remarks can hardly be otherwise than of the greatest value to the practical user of this material. Excerpt from Pavements and Roads: Their Construction and Maintenance The science of paving and the need of proper maintenance of pavements is yet comparatively little understood in this country, and the same is true in even greater degree with regard to roads. The editor of the journal named was led to give the matter special attention by seeing what was done in europe, during his visits there, and finally began an investigation of work on streets and roads in England, France and other countries, the result of which was the gathering of a large and very valuable mass of information in regard to the subject. Of this everything likely to be of practical use in America was printed in T be Engineering and Building Record, and is given here in more convenient shape. With it appears a large quantity of matter from American sources, including the prize essays on Road Construction and Maintenance submitted in the competition instituted by the journal named in December, 1889. It will be seen that the great bulk of the book is made up of records of experience and statements of cost in different places. The comments are based on this experience.
