NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A fascinating look at how consumers perceive logos, ads, commercials, brands, and products.”—Time How much do we know about why we buy? What truly influences our decisions in today’s message-cluttered world? In Buyology, Martin Lindstrom presents the astonishing findings from his groundbreaking three-year, seven-million-dollar neuromarketing study—a cutting-edge experiment that peered inside the brains of 2,000 volunteers from all around the world as they encountered various ads, logos, commercials, brands, and products. His startling results shatter much of what we have long believed about what captures our interest—and drives us to buy. Among the questions he explores: • Does sex actually sell? • Does subliminal advertising still surround us? • Can “cool” brands trigger our mating instincts? • Can our other senses—smell, touch, and sound—be aroused when we see a product? Buyology is a fascinating and shocking journey into the mind of today's consumer that will captivate anyone who's been seduced—or turned off—by marketers' relentless attempts to win our loyalty, our money, and our minds.

Consider this story. A young man was looking for a place of worship. He did not have a particular place in mind. All he needed was a place where the name of the Lord is called in reverence and worship. He entered a short street with fifteen houses on either side of the road. In that street were ten churches. All of them were blaring high decibels of worship songs. He inspected the all ten of the churches and found that there was nothing different. Even the paint on the walls were all the same. The doors were all the same. The only difference was in the name of the church and they all claimed to be "...Bible Church"How would the young man choose?Consider also this that happened to a conference speaker. He was invited to speak to a hundred man audience. After a five star performance, they all came forward to pump his hand and tell him how wonderful and useful his presentation was. The problem was that they all said the same thing, using the same words and all left after a handshake. None had a call card. They were all in black suits and white shirts! It was as if someone had given a dress code to them earlier! The only thing they gave him was their phone numbers which they were dictating for him.How could he have taken note of any one of them?On the other hand, he was in another conference about a week later. The audience was as excited as this other one and they equally came forward to meet him of them gave their call cards while five gave a detailed magazine each that described their ministries and what exactly they do as well as stating clearly about seven differences between them and those other ministries with similar visions. Two months after his visit to this last group, the speaker picked up the call cards to refresh his memory and also read through some of the magazine to take note of what each ministry does and what makes them unique! These enable him to keep in contact with them and to network them to others. Many a time, someone wants to introduce you to another but knows not what to say. He cannot even remember your name talk less of what you do. He met your acquaintance, yes but it did not go beyond a lukewarm handshake. Yes, you mentioned one run of the mill name that he easily forgot. This guy is in the business of meeting people daily. He cannot remember anything significant about you. Nothing struck him as special about you and where he did not notice anything peculiar, you did not have anything to say for yourself or ministry. What do you want him to remember? You cannot really blame him - human memory is known to fail. He has so many other things to think about and other events in the day to worry about. He has not even kept track of several appointments to keep not to remember a drab, self-effacing fellow like you.The situation is as bad as your congregants do not even know what is special about you. They want to tell outsiders about you and your ministry but they do not know what to say because you the leader and mentor has not been able to brand yourself. What is special about you and what really is your vision? How is your approach to ministry different from that other ministers you know? Why should a person pass by several ministries and head for your own?The last straw to break the Carmel's back, so to say is the fact that as a networking minister, many have said to me, man of God, I want to come to your country. Can you arrange it? That is all. I know next to nothing about them and they fail to help me by providing anything I can read to get one or two things about their ministry or person. In response to these challenges, I have drawn up forty questions that when a person or pastor answers, he or she is already self or ministry branding.

Nation branding--a set of ideas rooted in Western marketing--gained popularity in the post-communist world by promising a quick fix for the identity malaise of "transitional" societies. Since 1989, almost every country in Central and Eastern Europe has engaged in nation branding initiatives of varying scope and sophistication. For the first time, this volume collects in one place studies that examine the practices and discourses of the nation branding undertaken in these countries. In addition to documenting various rebranding initiatives, these studies raise important questions about their political and cultural implications.
