Excerpt from The Methodist Protestant Herald, 1931, Vol. 37 Prohibition is enforced as well as other laws. There is no law that stops in toto the acts they were made to curb. Take, for instance, the law of murder. Murders increase from year to year, yet, what man would be fool enough to say abolish the law, Thou shalt not kill, and legalize every man that wishes to kill. There is a great rich and powerful organization that is gripping this nation with deadly claws. It's intent is to ride a political horse. Beware of this devil fire - eating monster; it is foreign, and wishes to fatten on the life blood of our pure American citizenship. The one-half of one per cent. Is just what they, themselves, wrote into the law as an interpretation of what was called an intoxicating drink when we were trying state control. Excerpt from Methodist Protestant Herald, 1928, Vol. 34 It seems that there is a new interest in the true values of worship. This closer examination of what constitutes real worship is ruling out much haphazard, aimless digging of the cheaper type. It is now known that true worship is not a matter of exhibition. It is very sacred. Reverence and even silence is basic in worship. There must be time and opportunity for the Spirit to speak. Participating rather than spectating is the law of worship. And so, since only a few persons in the local church know or care anything about the jump of notes and the duration of rests, these few have the delight of wading through the two-page puzzles while the larger number sit in ignorance and spiritual starvation. This large number, therefore, come and go, try to fix themselves into the church but find it mighty hard since there is no easy, natural and satisfying expression of their heart's feeling. Excerpt from Methodist Protestant Herald, 1935, Vol. 42 Now I have shown you boys where you stand. Now I want to show you where I stood 60 years ago. The first preacher I ever heard preach was in an old log school house and church, deeded to both, I think. It was near where Bethel church now stands, in Randolph county. (now I seem to hear somebody say, he sure is from a rough place.) Rough and tough was right 60 years ago. It is much better down in Randolph now, I know (because B'rother Bates has been boosting it). Excerpt from Methodist Protestant Herald, Vol. 44: November 18, 1937 Like the Pilgrim Fathers: we have had bountiful harvests; business has been much better than last year With many. No great plague or pestilence has swept our land. While wars and rumors of war trouble other nations, there is peace within our bounds. And there is a turning to the Church by some who had ceased to assemble themselves at the places appointed for worship. There are other evidences of a rising tide of righteous living. People are remembering the orphan child and'the benevolent enterprises of the Church. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
