Excerpt from The Methodist Episcopal Church in the South Is the Methodist Episcopal Church, by its efforts to establish and extend itself in the States which were once known as Slave States, violating any right of any other Church; and this, of course, means any right of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South? In trying to answer this question, I have in mind, at the present moment, not so much what may have been said at any time by ministers of our own Church in the North, as what ministers and members of our Church, in the prosecution of their work in the South, are not unfrequently compelled to hear from ministers and members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in regard to our presence in their midst. It is affirmed by them that we are out of our place in being in the South; that, agreeably to the Plan of Separation adopted by the General Conference of 1844, the South was set apart as the field of operation for the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, while the Methodist Episcopal Church was expected to limit its labors to the North. Excerpt from History of the Organization of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South More than a quarter of a century has elapsed since the organization of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. The men who were prominent in the General Conference of 1844, the extrajudicial legislation of which body resulted in the division of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States into two separate and distinct ecclesiastical organizations, with but few exceptions, have passed away. The names of Olin, Bangs, Finley, Elliott, Collins, Ham-line, and of Bascom, Winana, Longstrect, Capers, Smith, and Fowler, no longer appear on the roll of the Conferences where, for so many years, they were the bulwarks of the Church. Bishop Morris, the senior Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, (North, ) alone remains of the men who composed the College of Bishops at that period. No longer able to go in and out before his brethren, he enjoys a serene old age, and is joyful in contemplation of the heavenly inheritance. His colleagues have passed over the river, and entered upon "the rest that remaineth to the people of God." Excerpt from Women and Missions: In the Methodist Episcopal Church, South In the following pages the author has set fourth merely the outstanding facts in the history of the organized woman's missionary work in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. The great underlying purpose, however, has been to state these facts in such a way that they themselves will tell the story of God's marvelous leading through the years. The vision of service came first to a small group of women without means, without experience, and with no authorized channel through which to work; but in less than fifty years their prayers and their small efforts had resulted in the enlistment of over two hundred thousand women and children in the auxiliaries of the Woman's Missionary Society. The appeal of one small school in China and the cry of distress sent out in behalf of the poorly paid preachers on the frontier resulted in an organization which in 1920 was conducting well-equipped schools and social-evangelistic centers in the homeland and in seven foreign mission fields.
