Excerpt from Silent Reading: A Study of the Various Types The methods of the present inquiry are the complicated methods of the laboratory. By means of apparatus which has been fully described in an earlier study, x the eye-movements of a large number of pupils were photographed, and their habits of looking at the contents of the printed page were studied through comparisons of the resulting photographs. It will, perhaps, make the later discussions easier to follow if the general psychological principles which issue from this study are brie y illustrated. To this end we may describe some of the typical results from the studies to be reported in the later pages of this monograph. Excerpt from Silent Reading: With Special Reference to Methods, for Developing Speed, a Study in the Psychology and Pedagogy of Reading The processes and purposes involved in silent reading have lately been subjected to searching analysis. The former are revealed as both physiological and psychological, the latter as both complex and various. Each has its lessons for the guidance of the teacher; and each exalts the importance of reading as a school subject. Reading processes on their psychological side are essentially associative - associative of impressions with meanings and of meanings with each other. In the latter sense they are frequently identified with study. Indeed, silent reading of the reflective type differs in no practical sense from study. The fact that in study we repeat and recapitulate adds but little of a qualitative nature to the reading act. Processes on the physiological side consist in large part of eye-movements. The number, length, groupings, and progressive or recessive character of these movements are at once symptoms and conditions of reading efficiency. Moreover, they take place according to patterns which are peculiar to each individual, being the product of original nature and of practice. Excerpt from The Silent Readers Method of handling the books. Many teachers will prefer to keep the books in the class room, distributing them at the time of the silent reading lesson and collecting them again at its conclusion. In this way the material will remain fresh, and the drill exercises will always be under the control of the teacher. Excerpt from The Progressive Road to Silent Reading One of the most marked advances in educational theory and practice is the increasing recognition of the importance of silent reading. Until very recently reading was taught with reference almost exclusively to its oral phases - correct pronunciation, distinct enunciation, and ability to read without hesitancy. For some time, however, the more thoughtful teachers have felt that these standards failed to recognize the most essential element of good reading - the ability to extract quickly and unerringly the thought of the subject matter. Silent reading is the means which present-day thought and practice have provided to develop this skill. It is the object of this addition to The Progressive Road to Reading series to embody those types of training, based upon the findings of experimental science, that will produce efficiency in silent reading. Children do not learn to read for thought unless taught to do so by a method suitable to their mental attainments. The method presented in this series of books is the outgrowth of actual work in the classroom, and the authors' confidence in the method employed is based upon its successful classroom use.
