Reporter, author, artist, and screenwriter Wallace Smith (1888–1937) served as the Washington correspondent for the Chicago American for over a decade, and originated the paper's Joe Blow comic panel feature. Reputed to have been one of the most colorful characters to have worked for the Hearst newspapers, he switched back and forth between cartooning and reporting, covering subjects as diverse as the criminal trials of Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle and Pancho Villa's Mexican campaigns. Smith's experiences as an eyewitness to the armed struggles of the Mexican Revolution during the 1910s and '20s inspired these remarkable stories. They begin with the title tale of a soldadera, one of the many women who abandoned their conventional roles to fight in the revolution. Populated by soldiers, bandits, and peasants, these tales of love, treachery, courage, and adventure are illustrated by the author's atmospheric drawings from his field sketchbook.

A magnificently illustrated Chinese folklore tale about a tigress, a seer, a King, and the prince, who must leave his family and learn the ways of the tigers so that the war between man and animal can end. Deep in the Great Forest, a tigress is mourning the death of her tiger babies who have been killed by hunters. Seeking revenge, she attacks the villages, destroying houses and prompting the king to gather his army. But a seer named Lao Lao warns the king that if he angers the tigress further she will destroy the kingdom. Lao Lao counsels the king to give his own son to the tigress and promises that no harm will come to the boy. The next morning, the king brings the prince to the edge of the Great Forest and tells him, “Now you must go on alone.” To end the war between man and animal, the prince must forget his human ways and begin to learn what tigers know. The Tiger Prince was inspired by The Tigress, a late Shang dynasty bronze vessel in the Cernuschi Museum in Paris depicting a scene from the Chinese folktale of a baby raised by a tigress.

A rare look at a magnificent predator. Supple, powerful, long, lean and intense, tigers are one of the world's most beautiful predators. Though fierce and efficient, an estimated 5,000 tigers are all that survive in the wild. Tiger provides a thorough understanding of this remarkable animal based on firsthand observations. Using stunning photography and maps, the book reveals how shrinking habitats and decreasing food supplies are forcing tigers to live in unnaturally high densities, often with deadly results. Tiger draws on the latest research and extensive field experience to deal with every aspect of its behavior: Social structures Breeding patterns and family life Martial arts-like hunting tactics Dietary favorites and oddities Communication and interaction. Two hundred and fifty photographs capture tigers in range of activities: devouring prey in the jungle, at play with cubs, warding off scavengers, at rest and on the prowl. Fascinating commentary offers intriguing new ideas about supporting this critically endangered animal, a first step in ensuring that they never die out.
