Excerpt from The Literature of Roguery, Vol. 1 of 2 It has been my purpose to make this study authoritative, not only in the main, but in matters of detail. To this end the conclusions of the standard monographs dealing with its va rions phases have been embodied in the text, and such works of reference, as well as the best editions of originals, are noted in bibliographies appended to each chapter. In every case, however, I have worked at first hand with the sources them selves and can confess to little immediate debt to books about books. To friends my obligation is greater. Professor G. R. Car penter of Columbia University first called my attention to this subject ten years ago. Professor G. E. Woodberry directed my earlier investigations in the field and personally supervised the issue of my Romances of Roguery, dealing with the picar esque novel in Spain. To Sr. Menendez y Pelayo and the late Professor Jan ten Brink, as to Professor J. E. Spingarn of Columbia University, I am indebted for valuable suggestions; while to Professor W. A. Neilson of Harvard University I owe the thanks of one who has benefited by the kind offices of an admirable editor and a generous friend. F. W. C. Excerpt from Romances of Roguery, Vol. 1 of 2: An Episode in the History of the Novel This essay was submitted in partial fulfil ment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Columbia University. The subject falls naturally into two parts, the first dealing with the origin, rise, and decay in Spain of the romance of roguery, commonly called the picaresque novel; the second deal ing with Spanish influence and native de velopment beyond the Peninsula, in France, Germany, Holland, and England. The second part will be presented in a future publication, the research for which is already accomplished; but the first part, now issued, besides treating Spanish picaresque fiction in full, together with the social and literary causes leading to its ascendency, is concerned outside of Spain with translations of these novels and their direct incorporation in other literatures. Excerpt from The Literature of Roguery, Vol. 1 of 2 This book presents a detailed study of a large, complex, and important tract of literature. In the main it deals with what has hitherto escaped classification, or considers familiar matter from a new angle. Such types as the anatomy of roguery and the criminal biography are here for the first time defined and displayed in their development and connection with imaginative letters. Other types, like the jest-book, the drama, and the detective story, are now first correlated with the genre. Authors never before ranged in this camp are accorded honors there, and the credentials of those long enrolled are subjected to revision. If the English novel in a few specimens has already received attention as exemplifying the picaresque strain, no endeavor has before been made to discuss it from this as a whole. Nor has any rigorous criticism of individual works sought, as here, to standpoint determine their exact dependence upon foreign sources or the degree of their resemblance to and divergence from models of the type in other lands. In the broadest sense, this history follows the fortunes of the anti-hero in literature. More narrowly, it is a study of realism, for it investigates the role enacted in literary art by the observation of low-life. Specifically, it traces in English letters a notable series of gradations from the first crude records of actuality to the complete reshaping of experience by the imagination, and in this process it points a constant tendency toward romanticism, counteracted at times by fresh returns to fact. Excerpt from Rogues of the North At last, it seemed, he could no longer contain his excitement. He raised his head and swung around abruptly in his Chair. I believe we're going to be rich, Elise l he exclaimed. A young woman was stretched on a cushioned locker behind him, listlessly inspecting the illustrations Of a year-old magazine. She sat up as the man spoke, allowed the magazine to slide from her lap, and lifted her blue eyes wearily. We've always been on the point Of becoming rich - ever since I can remember, she Observed with a notable lack Of enthusiasm. What is it this time, father? More translations? I hope, after this time that we're through with the translations forever. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
