Excerpt from Saint Francis of Assisi: A Biography And thus I take leave of this work which has so long been the centre of my labor and research. To write about St. Francis of Assisi should have been his own affair, for what does he himself say in the S peculum perfectionis? The Emperor Charlemagne, Roland, Holger, and all the other Knights Of the Round Table fought the heathen unto death and won the victory over them, and at the end became them selves holy martyrs and died in the battle for the faith Of Christ. But now there are many who, by simply telling Of their actions, hope to win honor and fame from mankind. Also there are now many who, by simply preaching on what the saints have done, wish to win honor and fame. Excerpt from Life of St. Francis of Assisi Vimmbbfiwd'l'afssise is a delightful piece of literature; but had the author possessed the fuller knowledge Supplied by historical research since 1894 - a research in which he himself has taken a lead ing part - I think that his book would have been a more authentic history. J. J Orgensen's recent work, known to me only in its French translation, has undoubtedly caught more of the spiritual thought and mental atmosphere of St. Francis; and he had the advantage which M. Sabatier did not possess, of the research work just referred to. Nevertheless it seems to me the final biography of the saint is yet to be desired. I cannot presume to have attained this desired goal; but perhaps this present book may do something towards its attainment in the hope that it will do so; the book is published. Excerpt from The Life of S. Francis of Assisi A very common failing amongst men is to adopt one extreme in the endeavor to avoid another, and sometimes not to perceive that the extreme into which they fall is greater than that which they had sought to flee from. TO insure themselves against weak incredulity, some have imbibed such prejudice against the miracles in the Lives Of the Saints, that they cannot endure to hear of them; the very ideas of miracles, revelations, ecstasies, visions, apparitions, are hateful and disgusting to them; all that is said on these subjects they look upon as fabulous and incredible they call in question the most undeniable evidence, or attribute these wonders to natural and unknown causes. The wonders which are recorded in the Life of St. Francis, afford an Opportunity of grappling with these prejudices: it must first be shown that they are unreasonable, of which here is the proof. Excerpt from Assisi of Saint Francis The task of writing an historical sketch of Assisi is no light one, since the material at the disposition of the student is extremely voluminous. I have, except for the lives of St F ran cis and St Clare, chosen only a few episodes from the eventful, and somewhat monotonous story of the little city, episodes that appeared to me likely to prove interesting to the general reader.
