Excerpt from The Life, Letters, and Sermons of Bishop Herbert De Losinga, Vol. 1 The occasion of this work was an accident, many months. Thus precluded from active work, he turned his thoughts to the question whether something might not be done in the line of literature, to throw light upon the origin of the institution with which he had recently become connected. And what so obvious as the story of the Founder, illustrated by his Letters, several of which had never been translated (though all of them had been published in the original Latin), and by his Sermons, which had never yet appeared in print at all? If he is asked to shew any motive for turning his studies in this particular direction, beyond the fact of his connexion with the cathedral which Herbert founded, he can only plead a desire to do such honour as might be done (consistently with the truth of history) to the name and memory of one, to whose pious munificence in times of old he and others at the present day are much indebted.
