In theology every legal writer is compelled to deal with a subject of inexhaustible freshness and life in a merely verbal way, and to handle the heart of things with out tenderness, and therefore without truth. But it would have been desirable that one approaching a science of so majestic a range should at least have had some scientific acquaintance with it, or some spe cial training. Failing this, all that can be done is to put the necessary questions, and leave it to theologians to answer them.
