History of San Marino, travel and tourism. San Marino, Sam Marino history, San Marino travel guide, San Marino eBook, San Marino facts, San Marino location, San Marino people. Government and Politics. San Marino, small republic situated on the slopes of Mount Titano, on the Adriatic side of central Italy between the Emilia-Romagna and Marche regions and surrounded on all sides by the Republic of Italy. It is the smallest independent state in Europe after Vatican City and Monaco and, until the independence of Nauru (1968), the smallest republic in the world. In the year 257 of the Christian era, at a time when the persecutions against the Christians were becoming more and more harsh, the Roman emperors Diocletian and Maximian decided to rebuild the city of Rimini, which was destroyed by Demosthenes, king of the Liburni people. To this end, they recruited architects, masons and skilled workers from every part of the Empire. Among these, Marino and Leone came to Rimini from Dalmatia and they soon distinguished themselves for their expertise in stone working, as well as for their exceptional moral virtues.

San Marino History. Discovery, Foundation of the nation, Culture and Cultural Policies. Tourism. The territory of the Republic of San Marino was frequented and inhabited since remote times, as testified to by the discovery of several archaeological remains dating back from the Eneolithic Age third millennium onwards. Important traces of human presence have been found for the Bronze and Iron Ages, as well as for the Villanovan, Roman and Goths' Ages. With regard to the latter, the remains found include some furnishings and objects of very refined jewellery dating back to the 5th and 6th centuries. On Mount Titano, where the San Marino community first settled, the remains of an important cultural site have also been found. In this place, which started to be frequented in the 5th century., a divinity was worshipped, which was thought to have thaumaturgic powers. The community, from which the State of San Marino subsequently originated, consolidated during the late Middle Ages, probably around a monastery, which had been built on Mount Titano already in the 6th century

"This unique book examines the history, culture, and inner workings of the seven smallest independent countries in Europe. These are among the oldest states on the continent and, despite their diversity, they have much in common. Most have relatively high per capita incomes and life expectancies, and relatively low unemployment. This narrative presents the unique issues that confront small countries, including maintaining their independence, economic viability, preserving their native languages, and sustaining their governments. The second part of the book describes each microstate in turn, showing how each one has met these challenges and adapted over time. These concise and engaging chapters contain cultural information on subjects including the arts, gastronomy, and popular tourist sites."--Provided by publisher.
