Excerpt from The History of Catholic Emancipation, Vol. 1 of 2: And the Progress of the Catholic Church in the British Isles (Chiefly in England) From 1771 to 1820 Eleven years ago I accidentally discovered that the year 1874 was the centenary of the first Act of Parliament which relaxed the penal code against Catholics. It was an Act of the Irish Parliament, and therefore did not affect the English. But it was the beginning of a better order of things. It was the prelude to the Act of 1778, which passed unanimously at Westminster, and was the first Relief Act in favour of English Catholics. The circumstance of this Act of 1774 having been brought to my notice, suggested to me the idea of collecting, as far as my limited opportunities would permit, all the facts which should come under my notice connected with the progress of Emancipation and of the Catholic Church in England during the last hundred years. I had then no intention of publishing the result of my note-taking. I thought that I might perhaps collect matter which would be useful to some future historian. But I was strongly advised by a friend to take notes only with the view of working them into a history myself, as no one else, he said, would be likely to do so. I took the advice; and when, five years afterwards, the year 1879 brought us to the fiftieth year since the passing of the great act of 1829, a good opportunity was afforded of beginning the history.
