Except that right now, he doesn’t know that. He can’t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very, very long time. And he’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company. His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, it’s up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery—and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species. And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he’s got to do it all alone. Or does he? An irresistible interstellar adventure as only Andy Weir could deliver, Project Hail Mary is a tale of discovery, speculation, and survival to rival The Martian—while taking us to places it never dreamed of going.

Most Catholics can recite the Hail Mary but haven’t actually reflected on the meaning of the prayer. Blogger and author Sarah Reinhard invited forty of the most popular Catholic voices, including Lisa M. Hendey, Lisa Mladinich, and Brandon Vogt, to write a brief reflection on one word of the Hail Mary. In Word by Word: Slowing Down with the Hail Mary, popular Catholic author Sarah Reinhard compiled an accessible, profound, and unique meditation on each word of the Hail Mary, one of the most important prayer traditions in Catholic life. Each of the reflections encourages readers to “slow down” with the Hail Mary and experience previously unseen dimension in the popular devotion, making it come to life in a new way. This unique, formative, and informative exploration of the beloved prayer is a gift to anyone who wants to be continually changed through it—learning to slow down and examine things more closely. The book is based on a blog series Reinhard facilitated with popular Catholic writers and social media experts, including Lisa M. Hendey, Brandon Vogt, Paula Huston, Kate Wicker, Pat Gohn, Kevin Lowry, Lisa Mladinich, Donna-Marie Cooper O’Boyle, Fr. Patrick Toner, and Jeff Young.

Hail Mary? examines the sexist and misogynist themes that underlie the socially constructed religious imagery of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Maurice Hamington explores the sources for three prominent Marian images: Mary as the "the blessed Virgin," Mary, the "Mediatrix"; and Mary, "the second Eve." Hamington critiques these images for the valorization of sexist forces with the Catholic Church that serve to maintain systems of oppression against women. In challenging dominant, religious representations of Mary, Hamington surveys a variety of emerging reinterpretations of Mary. He then provides a framework for further study of "non-alienating" images of Mary.

It has also a divine origin, for each of its three parts has been taught by God Himself. The first part, "Hail (Mary), full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou among women," was the greeting which the angel Gabriel, God's special messenger to the virgin Mary, addressed to her (Luke 1:27,28). The second part, "Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb (Jesus)" (5:41,42), was the reply Saint Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Ghost," made to Mary's greeting. And the Catholic Church, "the Church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth" (1 Timothy 3:15), founded by Jesus Christ and guided by the Holy Ghost, "the Spirit of truth" (John 15:26), has added the third part, "Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us, sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen."Therefore, when we recite the Hail Mary, we salute, venerate and exalt Mary as "the Mother of God" (Luke 1:43) with the very words which God Himself addressed to her through the angel Gabriel, His faithful ambassador, for the accomplishment of the mystery of the Incarnation of His divine Son; we congratulate Mary in the words the Holy Ghost inspired Saint Elizabeth to utter, for being exalted above all creatures as the Mother of Him who "is called the Son of the Most High" (Luke 1:32). Then with the in fallible Church of the Son of God, we invoke and beseech Mary, His divinely chosen Mother, to help us, to "pray for us," weak and frail and sinful mortals, both in life and at the hour of our death, that we, too, may be admitted to see, praise and love her divine Son and her forever in heaven.
