1821. Alexander Pushkin is in exile in Bessarabia, Russia. Restless and depressed, he is spending a month in Odessa on leave. He recalls a visit, the previous year, to the palace of the Tatar khans where he saw a Fountain of Tears: a khan's monument to Maria Potocka, a Polish countess who died before he could persuade her to love him, and to the khan's own perpetual grief. Pushkin will soon immortalise Maria, the khan and the Fountain of Tears in his poema. The interwoven stories of the captive countess and the exiled poet take place on a day in Bakhchisary and Odessa respectively.

Endorsements: ""Tears are a little-known subject spiritually to most people, and Maggie Ross is very helpful in giving us both a historical grounding and a contemporary personal relevance for it."" --Tilden Edwards, Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation ""Maggie Ross has written a lovely, intelligent, and costly book: costly in that it is evident that it cost her a great deal to write it, and costly in that the conscientious reader cannot but be challenged by it."" --Alan Jones, Dean of Grace Cathedral, San Francisco ""This is the only major work on tears today. A fountain in the desert, this book fills a genuine need--which is more than most books can claim."" --David Steindl-Rast, OSB ""Maggie Ross skillfully examines the gift and way of tears in relation to the evolution of Christian thought and spiritual theology. Her thesis that 'tears release us from the prison of power and control into the vast love and infinite possibility of God' is truly ecumenical."" --William H. While walking in Central Park, Connor is on the phone with Jake. While getting off the phone with him, he then bumps into a redhead. Her coffee spills all over his suit. After he grabs her hand to introduce himself, Connor feels an immediate spark with Kate. When he asks for her phone number, Connor never imagines the role that fate has just played in determining his future. After Jake convinces him to call Kate, Connor is smitten after just one date. Estranged from his parents for six years, Connor is still reeling from feelings of abandonment and realizes Kate is just the girl he wants to walk beside him on a journey of healing. Kate, who has been heartbroken before, hopes that Connor is not like all the others. As they fall in love and imagine their happily-ever-after, neither has any idea that Connor will soon awaken from the strangest dream and realize the love of his life is just that—a dream. Now only time will tell how far Connor will be willing to go to find her and how much he is willing to risk to learn things he doesn’t want to know. The Fountain is a beautiful tale of passion, love at first sight, and a young couple’s determination to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles in order to be together forever.
