If you only read one book on leadership this year, make it this one! Leadership experts David Pendleton and Adrian Furnham present an innovative model for leadership success in a turbulent world. When times are hard, leadership makes the greatest difference. This thoroughly updated second edition shows how to make the kind of difference that all organizations, both public and private sector, want and need. Early chapters show the powerful effect leadership can have on organizations; subsequent chapters present new ideas that are elegantly simple, conceptually coherent and radically different, based on the best research in the field. The ideas in this book have also been tested in major multinational organizations over recent years. The aim is to provide leaders and those who work with them with a practical guide to how to increase the effectiveness of leadership in any organization.

Challenged by a secret society of metalworkers, Eden must do all she can to save the only family she has left in this fantasy adventure. When Eden Smith moves into the beautiful and bizarre old mansion housing her grandfather, she discovers a strange society of elderly metalworkers whose mastery verges on the magical. Deadly mechanical birds, a cavernous chamber full of dirty dishes, a highly dangerous game of Machinist BINGO–life at the guild is not only strange, it’s also dangerous. Eden’s grandfather, Vulcan Smith, the most gifted of all the metalsmiths in the mansion, has just been sentenced to live out the rest of his days locked in a tiny basement room for rebelling against the guild. To save him, Eden will have to complete The Five Impossible Tasks, a series of deadly feats that have already killed off many of Eden and Vulcan’s ancestors. With the help of her new friend Nathaniel and a cast of eccentric old silversmiths, blacksmiths, and inventive machinists, Eden sets out to do the impossible before her newfound grandfather is lost to her forever. In The Five Impossible Tasks of Eden Smith, Tom Llewellyn has crafted a wholly original world of wild contraptions, roguish characters, and perilous feats perfect for fans of Karuna Riazi, Laura Ruby, and Lemony Snicket.

A smart and surprising political inventory for how America can reunite and revitalize in a time of crisis. Written by an admired leader of the Republican party, Rally Point: Five Tasks to Unite the Country and Revitalize the American Dream looks past the 2016 election, past the finger pointing and conventional political thinking, to focus on clear, primary principles that conservatives must debate and defend to protect the future of America. Raised in a working-class family in upstate New York, the first in his family to go to college, paid for in part by his service in the National Guard, Chris Gibson rose from Private to Colonel in the Army, including combat command in the storied 82nd Airborne Division. RALLY POINT is his story: what he's learned from the "School of Hard Knocks" and how he's applied those precious life lessons during his service in Iraq and in Congress. Drawn from a deep appreciation of history and American exceptionalism, Gibson provides incisive and frank analysis of the current political environment, including President Trump, and provides a roadmap based on time-tested Founding principles to help unite our country and revitalize the American Dream. RALLY POINT is a thoughtful, compelling, enjoyable read - a must for serious-minded Americans looking for answers in this challenging political environment.

For security reasons, using parallel writing tasks within or across different test administrations is common practice in large-scale language testing. Lack of task comparability would result in unjustified variance in test performance and consequently jeopardize test validity and fairness. Thus, it is crucial for test developers to gather empirical evidence from different aspects to substantiate the fairness argument that scores are consistent and score-based decisions are impartial across parallel tasks. Despite many studies hitherto on writing task comparability, those addressing picture-prompt writing tasks in an integrated manner have remained quite underexplored. Therefore, this book investigates the comparability of five writing tasks with picture prompts randomly assigned across testing occasions in an in-house English proficiency test (EPT) of a comprehensive university from three perspectives—the scores, the texts, and the raters and test takers. Results show that task difficulty is not comparable either in terms of some lexical, syntactic and content features elicited or as judged by raters and test takers, which could be related with topic familiarity and conceptual clarity of the picture prompt. Yet, overall task comparability is achieved in not only final scores but also score distribution and classification accuracy. The findings support the fairness argument for EPT writing and provide theoretical, practical and methodological implications.
