Originally published in 1812 by the Spanish Jesuit Manuel Lacunza, "The Coming of Messiah in Glory and Majesty" is a visionary work of apocalyptic theology that has fascinated and inspired readers for over two centuries. In this English translation, the influential Scottish preacher Edward Irving provides a detailed commentary on Lacunza's text, exploring its rich symbolism and complex biblical references. Together, the two writers offer a compelling vision of the end times and the ultimate triumph of good over evil. Download Come, Lord Jesus! Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
‘The second coming of Jesus Christ is the core of the biblical worldview, the climax of the biblical message, the cornerstone of biblical theology, and the centrepiece of authentic biblical faith for the twenty-first century.’ At the heart of this bold opening statement by Stephen Motyer is the conviction that Jesus Christ is the ‘centre’ of the Scriptures, even though he only appears at the end. For the New Testament writers, Jesus Christ revolutionized their understanding of the Scriptures and gave them a new centre around which to interpret the work of God in the world – and the climax of that work is the ‘second coming’ of that same Jesus Christ. Jesus himself used the language of the Scriptures to promise his ‘coming again’, the ‘coming of the Son of Man’. Hence we need the whole of Scripture to understand what the second coming means for us today. The fact that the Bible ends with the prayer ‘Come, Lord Jesus!’ (Revelation 22:20) is deeply appropriate. The second coming is the ‘end’ of the biblical message, its ‘omega point’, its grand finale, the denouement when all the players in the drama of earth history, both human and angelic, are gathered in the drawing room to hear the Master unpack the plot and give the verdict. Motyer’s comprehensive, stimulating study is divided into two parts. Part One, ‘The biblical frame’, examines three Old Testament passages and lays the foundation for Part Two, ‘New Testament hopes and visions’, which explores a series of key texts. He focuses on the second coming, rather than on millennialism or the ‘end times’, in order to provide the fundamental biblical theology that must underlie our whole sense of God’s future for his world.

Download Studies in Late Medieval Wall Paintings, Manuscript Illuminations, and Texts Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This volume is an interdisciplinary consideration of late medieval art and texts, falling into two parts: first, the iconography and context of the great Doom wall painting over the tower arch at Holy Trinity Church, Coventry, and second, Carthusian studies treating fragmentary wall paintings in the Carthusian monastery near Coventry; the devotional images in the Carthusian Miscellany; and meditation for “simple souls” in the Carthusian Nicholas Love’s Mirror of the Blessed Life of Jesus Christ. Emphasis is on such aspects as memory, participative theology, devotional images, meditative practice, and techniques of constructing patterns of sacred imagery.

Download The Second Coming of Christ Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This book was originally published in 1896. It has eight chapters, each one written by a well-known minister of the era, except the last chapter written by an unknown with the initials J.W. Written for the layman, not the scholar, each chapter is in one way or another about the return of Christ. It is a very good book for anyone seeking to learn the basics of the second coming of Christ, called eschatology. Even though I have written four books on Bible prophecy, I plan to read this book and add it to my library. (Michael D. Fortner, publisher) AUTHORS of the chapters: 1. Harriet Beecher Stowe 2. D. L. Moody 3. J. C. Ryle 4. George Muller 5. D.W. White 6. G. C. Needham 7. Charles H. Spurgeon 8. J.W.

Download Her Majesty's Philosophers Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Informative, entertaining, against the grain, Her Majesty's Philosophers highlights the artificiality of prison life. By a Guardian correspondent (and with extracts to be published in that newspaper) this book is set to be a penal affairs classic which every student of crime and punishment should read. Building on his Guardian pieces about teaching Philosophy in prison, this is Alan Smiths account in extenso. From introducing Plato to ever-changing groups of hard-nosed prisoners to them wrestling with Bentham, Larkin and Shakespeare, it is packed with insights and unexpected turns. It paints a picture in which worlds collide and conventional morality is turned inside out as new modes of discourse change the mens thinking and ideas. At times surreal the book brings fresh perspectives to the minutiae of prison life: survival, coping, soap, teabags, cell mates, the constant noise and immediacy. And needless to say, the men come up with philosophical gems of their own. Her Majesty Philosophers is also about isolation, the long hours, knockbacks and the emotional mutilation of imprisonment; and whilst philosophy is soft and fluffy it contrasts starkly with the pragmatic world of prison officers, for whom the Holy Grail is Security, Keys and Prison Craft. The book charts how learning changes lives, especially for prisoners who missed out on formal education, whoonce motivatedbecome voracious readers and extraordinary students. It demonstrates more than any official report the value of a wider agenda than Basic Skills. Prisons have been labelled Universities of Crime, but colleges are increasingly populated by those who began their studies in a prison cell. In a book packed with wisdom and humour the author laments the fact that prison policy means that this is becoming a far less easy step.
