Excerpt from The Diocese of Meath, Ancient and Modern, Vol. 2 Much, undoubtedly, has been done, with laudable zeal, by Protestant as well as by Catholic writers, to preserve our records and to chronicle the deeds of our forefathers but much still remains to be done for, until each diocese has its separate history (and ample materials abound for such), the ecclesiastical annals, antiquities, and traditions of Ireland shall be altogether incomplete. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from History of the Diocese of Meath, Vol. 2 of 2 Nearly all the bishops followed the lead Of Dopping. There were, however, among them two non-jurors. One was Sheridan, Bishop Of Kilmore, who retaliated the injuries inflicted on him from his late sovereign by a faithful and immovable allegiance. He left his diocese and went over to England, and was there upon deprived, ostensibly because he had absented himself from his diocese without licence, but, Of course, really because he refused to take the oath of allegiance. The other non-juror was Otway, Bishop of Ossory. An order for his suspension was issued, but Bishop Dopping interceded for him, and urged that he that continues steadfast to the late King, from whom he received SO many disobligations, and so Slender a protection, will be much more so to his Majesty, when his judgment is convinced. 2 Dopping also wrote to Otway, setting forth the reasons why in his judgment the Prince Of Orange should be acknowledged. Whether he succeeded in convincing him, or whether, being such an old man, it was deemed advisable to condone his Offence, is not clear, but at all events, he was allowed to retain his See until his death, which occurred two years later. Excerpt from The Diocese of Meath, Vol. 1: Ancient and Modern I concurred in his remarks, but urged the impossibility of a priest on the mission, in the midst of so many urgent, onerous, and responsible duties, remote too from public libraries, and labouring under innumerable inconveniences, attempting so serious and so difficult an undertaking. He combated my objections, adduced various examples of persons who, for love of religion and country, compiled and wrote under more adverse circumstances, and concluded by pressing me most earnestly to do my part and make a beginning. I at length consented: he promised me his cooperation and assistance; and we parted - alas! To meet no more. In a few months after this interview the learned and venerated Dr. Kelly departed this life, profoundly lamented by all who knew him or heard of him, and was buried in the cemetery of the College of Maynooth. Peace to his soul. His death was indeed a loss - an irre parable, a national loss, - as no priest of our generation took a more absorbing interest in collecting the scattered records of our country, ' and disentombing the venerable history of our Church. To me it was peculiarly and seriously lament able, as, had he lived, I would have received many judicious and valuable suggestions. Excerpt from The Diocese of Meath, Vol. 3: Ancient and Modern Having brought the Ecclesiastical History of the Diocese of Meath, for the present, to a conclusion, the reader may expect, perhaps, a few words from the Author, more antiquo, by way of Preface. Imprimis, I am far from presuming to insinuate that I have exhausted this fertile subject, or that I have produced anything approaching to perfection. To accomplish such an undertaking would require more extensive research, much additional space, and years of incessant preparatory labor. However, I am conscious that I have spared no pains to gather together all the gems of our Diocesan history within my reach, and to arrange these facts in such an order that should an Annalist arise on some future day, endowed with eloquence, and possessed of great ecclesiastical learning, he will have comparatively little trouble in supplying my deficiencies, by compiling a work worthy of the ancient Diocese of Meath, and commensurate with its prescriptive fame.
