Excerpt from The Complete Foxhunter It may be asked, Who wants to hunt in the suburbs of any large and Of course there can be only one answer to such a question; but none the less it is a fact that many once good hunting countries have been curtailed owing to the extension of suburban districts. The result of this extension has been that all sorts of people have migrated from the inner to the extreme outer circles of London and of all large provincial towns, and have in their new abodes found themselves within reasonable touch of hunting. Many of these migrants, of course, are in no wise concerned when they happen to see hounds or hunting folk on the road; but others have been attracted, at first probably by the panoply of the chase, and afterwards by the sport itself. Excerpt from Recollections of a Fox-Hunter The idea of producing this volume for the press was suggested to me by a friend, who had been looking over my sporting memoranda, to which has been affixed, at his particular request, an account of my sporting career, from my earliest recollections. The work has no pretensions to any lucidus ordo in the arrangement of the Chapters, which are merely excerpta from my scrapbook, somewhat resembling the various receipts contained in a cookery book, which I hope, however, may not prove wholly unpalatable to the Sporting Public. This vintage book contains a detailed treatise on fox hunting, being an exposition of its science with information on kennel management, breeding hounds, and much more. With a wealth of invaluable information and many helpful tips, this volume is highly recommended for the modern rural sportsman and would make for a worthy addition to collections of hunting literature. Contents include: "The Arena of Breeding Foxhounds", "Quality to be Regarded before Quantity", "Sires and Dams of Approved Characters", "Breeding Judiciously versus Breeding Extensively", "Jasper a Case in Point", Huntsman and Whipper-in", "General Want of Harmony Between them as to the Occult Science", etc. Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. Excerpt from A Famous Fox-Hunter: Reminiscences of the Late Thomas Assheton Smith, Esq. Or the Pursuits of an English Country Gentleman In endeavouring faithfully to record what materials he has been able to collect, respecting the life and character of one of the greatest, if not the greatest, of British sportsmen, he has had much gratification in being able, from his per sonal knowledge of him, to pay this humble tribute to his nobler qualities as a man and as a Christian. Excerpt from Radnor Reminiscences a Foxhunting Journal An Arab proverb says, "True happiness is only to be found in two places - on the back of a horse and in the arms of the woman you love." Whether this happiness is divided fifty-fifty between the horse and the woman is rather a delicate matter; so to save the feelings of the ladies, maybe we had better not discuss it; but on one thing we will all agree, including the ladies, and that is, that a great deal of happiness has been derived from the back of a horse. Foxhunting and hunting-journalism are two quite different sports. The uninitiated are too prone to picture hunting as largely composed of elbows and legs, broken bones, scratched noses, and love affairs. That all of these do exist in the hunting-field, I will admit; but think for a moment of the other benefits to be derived. They are so numerous, it would be folly for me to undertake to write them down. Just as long as men and fair women have red blood in their veins and sporting spirits, hunting will continue; but hunting-journalism may disappear any minute, principally owing to the assassination of the poor journalists. They say it is always a mistake to apologize for ones efforts, but I must; and I offer them to the editors of The Tatler and The Sporting and Dramatic News of London, for the many sayings of their gifted correspondents that I have appropriated. To my other friends - well, maybe they wont be friends after they read these humble efforts; but I do offer my most sincere thanks to Miss Dorothy Mather and Mr. Benjamin Chew for their kind assistance.
