Excerpt from The Production of Cigar-Leaf Tobacco in Pennsylvania The tobacco produced in Pennsylvania is dark and'rather heavy, and therefore useful chiefly as a cigar filler, like that of Ohio, in con trast with that of Wisconsin, which is largely useful for binders, and with that of Connecticut, which is much used for wrappers. When properly fertilized, matured, cured, and sweated, Pennsylvania to bacco IS characterized by a mild, agreeable aroma and freedom from bitter, resinous, metallic, and rank flavors, and it burns well, leaving in most cases a coherent white ash. Excerpt from World Tobacco Reports: United States Leaf Tobacco in World Markets Tobacco was one of the first commodities exported from the area now included in the United States. The first record of exports refers to a cargo of pounds forwarded by the settlers of Jamestown, Virginia. This shipment reached the port of London in 1615. The price of tobacco in England was then very high; in 1618, fine Spanish leaf sold at 18 shillings per pound. High prices encouraged the Virginia Company to exploit the tobacco - growing possibilities of its colony, and in 1618 the Company's agent in Virginia was instructed to offer settlers 3 shillings per pound for their best tobacco, and l shilling 6 pence per pound for second quality. These prices were effective in stimulating production, and pounds of tobacco from.virginia entered the port of London in 1619. Thereafter, exports of colonial tobacco increased rapidly, as indi cated in Table 1, below. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Tobacco Situation: January, 1941 Prices of cigar leaf types have been not greatly different so far this season from prices a year earlier. Indicated supplies of filler and binder are somewhat higher this year than last; supplies of wrapper are slightly lower. Exports of United States tobacco continue to decline. Barring changes in the economic or military situation of nations at war or blockaded, no substantial improvement in the export situation is anticipated. Commodity Credit Corporation programs this year, as last, are designed to remove from the market the quantities and grades of those types customarily exported. Maurice Duke and Daniel P. Jordan vividly describe the colorful life and times of one of the South's—and America's—most important businesses and provide insight into how luck, management practices, and personalities helped the company rise to international prominence. Universal Leaf Tobacco Company, the world's largest independent leaf tobacco dealer, is one of the major buying arms for tobacco manufacturers worldwide, selecting, purchasing, processing, and storing leaf tobacco. The story opens during the aftermath of the Civil War when Southerners realized once again the worldwide potential of their native crop. The authors follow the company from its incorporation 1918 through one of the first hostile takeover attempts in American business, to its evolution in 1993 into Universal Corporation, a worldwide conglomerate with a number of products including tobacco. Based on scholarly research and over two hundred interviews with past and present Universal employees, this objective saga reveals much about American business and economic history.

The story of tobacco’s fortunes seems simple: science triumphed over addiction and profit. Yet the reality is more complicated—and more political. Historically it was not just bad habits but also the state that lifted the tobacco industry. What brought about change was not medical advice but organized pressure: a movement for nonsmoker’s rights.
