Buffalo is known as a city of clubs. These clubs have played a large part in the construction not only of character and tradition in the city but also in the building of the city itself. Social intercourse, as it relates to the gentlemen of Buffalo, has always been kept up to a healthful and elevating standard. It has developed into the formation of numerous clubs having for their purpose the promotion of sociability and freedom of friendly intercourse among their members. The author has chosen the Buffalo Club as the subject of this paper since it was the first and most prominent among these organizations and had a pronounced effect upon Buffalo's social life. The leading men of Buffalo have been members of the Buffalo Club and when any movement was begun to advance the civic, cultural, or business interests of the city an appeal has naturally been make for their assistance. The purpose of this paper is to examine the Buffalo club in the year of its founding (1867), the background into which it found its way and the influence it exerted on Buffalo at the time.

Buffalo, New York owes much of its fame to the Erie Canal, which ushered in unprecedented growth and prestige to what was at its peak the nation's eighth largest city. Burgeoning railroads and grain, coal, and lumber exports dominated this industrial giant through the dawn of the twentieth century, culminating in the city's crowning moment of glory, the Pan American Exposition of 1901. As industry declined and residents fled to the suburbs, perceptive citizens recognized Buffalo's vast architectural treasures and rescued many landmarks with the intention of preserving the community's heritage.
