Excerpt from The Book of Nature Study, Vol. 2 Over two hundred species of bees are found in this country. The lower members of the group do not surpass the social wasps in the complexity Of their structure, and fall distinctly below them in matters Of domestic economy. The females construct simple tubular nests in the earth, or in walls or stems Of plants, and in these they rear a few young, which are nourished on the pollen and nectar of owers, but never upon animal food. Each female is entirely responsible for her own house and Offspring; there are no workers (sterile females), but simply fertile females and males. In habits they Vary greatly some merely excavate burrows in the soil, others construct their nests of mud, Of woolly fibres, or of pieces neatly cut from leaves of rose trees, sallows, privet and other plants, employing wall crevices, door-locks, spaces beneath roof - slates or tiles, or holes in the earth or in trees as safe hiding-places for their young. Others again build no nest, but cuckoo-like deposit their eggs in the nests formed by other species. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Book of Nature, Vol. 2 of 3 Before we gird ourselves then to a critical inda gation into any particular part of the immense theatre which this study presents to us, it may be convenient to contemplate it upon that general survey which it is the object of such schemes or classifications to lay down; to travel over' it and mark its more prominent characters by a map, anterior to our entering upon the country itself. And such are the humble pretensions of the present lecture, which will merely attempt to place before you a brief sketch of zoology, in iegard to its bare such a sketch is the whole that our time, Will allow; yet if it be found faithful, it'will assuredly be found beneficial: for'if the outlines be correctly laid down, the picture may be filled up at our; leisure. Excerpt from The Book of Nature Study, Vol. 6 First, as regards sunshine and temperature, bring out the fact that on any given day it is always hotter in the sun than out of it; that our hottest days are those when the sun Shines longest (roughly speaking, that is) that it is colder at night when the sun does not shine than in the day when it does, and so arrive at the deduction that the sun is the great source of heat. What then becomes of the sun on cloudy and foggy days? The teacher will be wise to devote much time to the answering of this question, for the fact of the sun's presence in the sky on dull and Cloudy days, behind the clouds, is by no means clearly realised by children and uninstructed people. Excerpt from The Book of Nature Study, Vol. 3 It will be clear from what has been said that the study Of plant life is abundantly fascinating. Every one with even a small garden can watch the spread Of a given plant, or the adapta tion Of structure, or the growth Of seedlings. Even without a garden a great deal can be done with window boxes, with seeds in saucers, or in glass jam jars. The habit Of Observing Nature brings with it its own delight, and, once begun, is not likely to be given up but the importance Of a real, first-hand knowledge Of Nature cannot be exaggerated in the case Of those engaged in what is popularly called Nature Study. The main Object Of Nature Study should be to develop the mental faculties Of Observation and reasoning. This cannot be done satisfactorily except by those teachers who are always finding out things for themselves, and constantly experimenting in one way or another, either repeating the experiments Of others, or, still better, devising new ones, however small, for themselves. For this reason, constant reference will be made in this section to new work both in America and in Europe, and a bibliography will be given, in which the more recent botanical literature will be mentioned. Laboratory experiments are valuable, and in towns may be the only ones possible, but those who live in the country should be content with nothing -less than Observing Nature accurately and, like Gilbert White Of Selborne, sympathetic ally and reverently. Excerpt from The Book of Nature Study, Vol. 4 If a plant is dug up and the underground parts freed from the soil the green leafy shoot will be found to have arisen from a thick brown underground stem Of rather irregular shape. The surface Of this is marked with narrow scars left by scale-leaves, and a little examination will throw light on the mode Of growth Of the plant. The leafy shoot grows straight up from the thin anterior portion Of the underground stem, and appears to be the development Of the apex Of the latter. In the axil of a scale leaf at the base Of the shoot is a large bud, which is destined to grow into next year's shoot. On looking at the Older portion of the underground stem we recognise the large circular scars left by the aerial stem at the end Of each annual joint or segment, further growth having always been carried on by a lateral bud. A number Of thick roots grow out from the underground stem, and the latter increases in thickness, its tissues serving as a place of storage for reserve food material. This is used in the earlier stages Of the growth Of the leafy shoots. The cow-parsnip is thus a perennial herb, the leafy shoots Of which die down each autumn, leaving the Old underground stem and the bud which continues the growth next season. When more than one bud is established the underground stem becomes branched, and more than one leafy shoot is sent up from it each year.
