"The Blue Velvet Dress Says I Told You So" is a collection of poetry and paintings by artist Heidi Wong. It fearlessly tackles many humanitarian and existential issues ranging from equality, loss, neglect, and legacy. This second edition has been entirely re-edited and redesigned. While the book possesses heavy feminist overtones, Heidi moves toward humanitarian issues on a much larger scale using allegory that allows the work to be accessible to anyone struggling or healing. Velvet Dress is something that demands to be read and experienced by all.

After a painful breakup with her boyfriend, young tennis pro Annie MacGregor leaves Arizona and relocates to a glamorous tennis club in Southern California. There she encounters a diverse group of people, some of whom are famous. Among her new acquaintances is the senior pro at the club, a tall, handsome man of Mexican descent, who tends to disappear mysteriously on Sundays. Although Annie enjoys her pupils, and finds the club a beautiful place to work, she is bothered by the tension she senses. At first she believes it will go away, for how, she thinks, could anyone remain tense for very long in such an attractive setting? But as the weeks go by, she realizes that the tension has increased. Tempers are frayed, and the numerous sexual intrigues that are going on at the club are not helping the situation. Annie feels more and more uncomfortable. She begins to wonder if her move to California was a good idea. Then her Arizona boyfriend turns up, and a murder takes place. Annie finds herself with a choice to make as she and her friends face horror at the club.

The idea of this women's magazine originated with Samuel Williams, a Cincinnati Methodist, who thought that Christian women needed a magazine less worldly than Godey's Lady's Book and Snowden's Lady's Companion. Written largely by ministers, this exceptionally well-printed little magazine contained well-written essays of a moral character, plenty of poetry, articles on historical and scientific matters, and book reviews. Among western writers were Alice Cary, who contributed over a hundred sketches and poems, her sister Phoebe Cary, Otway Curry, Moncure D. Conway, and Joshua R. Giddings; and New England contributors included Mrs. Lydia Sigourney, Hannah F. Gould, and Julia C.R Dorr. By 1851, each issue published a peice of music and two steel plates, usually landscapes or portraits. When Davis E. Clark took over the editorship in 1853, the magazine became brighter and attained a circulation of 40,000. Unlike his predecessors, Clark included fictional pieces and made the Repository a magazine for the whole family. After the war it began to decline and in 1876 was replaced by the National Repository. The Ladies' Repository was an excellent representative of the Methodist mind and heart. Its essays, sketches, and poems, its good steel engravings, and its moral tone gave it a charm all its own. -- Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.

He begins to desire blood and his people are in danger of himself. Until he finds the evil witch from Tollyria in his royal garden. “I can tame a demon dog,” she says. *** Sania has died. At least she thought so. But then she opens her eyes in Aluthia’s royal garden and when she looks at the reflection of the pond… she sees herself as a black swan. Compelling period fiction for 9+ readers from the Waterstones Children's Prize shortlisted Helen Peters. Evie couldn't be angrier with her mother. She's only gone and got married again and has flown off on honeymoon, sending Evie to stay with a godmother she's never even met in an old, creaky house in the middle of nowhere. It is all monumentally unfair. But on the first night, Evie sees a strange, ghostly figure at the window. Spooked, she flees from the room, feeling oddly disembodied as she does so. Out in the corridor, it's 1814 and Evie finds herself dressed as a housemaid. She's certain she's gone back in time for a reason. A terrible injustice needs to be fixed. But there's a housekeeper barking orders, a bad-tempered master to avoid, and the chamber pots won't empty themselves. It's going to take all Evie's cunning to fix things in the past so that nothing will break apart in the future... Absorbing, brilliant storytelling from the author of The Secret Hen House Theatre, The Farm Beneath the Water, Anna at War and The Jasmine Green Series for younger readers.
