It may look like an ordinary coloring book, but We Salute You! is quite extraordinary in terms of it's many noble objectives; objectives which range from enhancing police-community relations, to building police morale. Yes, it's a coloring book that inherently features educational and recreational benefits. And, yes, the book's narrative is explicitly designed to impart traditional values with respect to individual and community trust in professional law enforcement. But because this coloring book was created by the two psychologists who developed The Blue Morale Project, it seems fair to assume that it also contains some association to re-storing, building, or maintaining "blue morale." Actually, there is such an association. It comes in the form of a blank page near the end of the book on which children are encouraged to create their own illustrations and text--preferably, creations that reflect long-felt but seldom verbalized messages of gratitude towards the police. It is recommended that these communications be uploade to The Blue Morale Project website at bluemorale.com where they will be screened for appropriateness for publication and then posted on that site. In an environment where police officers have been widely under-appreciated, and even unjustly criticized, given all the good that they do, it is just possible that such sincere expressions of support from some of the community's youngest members may well inspire the officers who access these communications online. Such messages of gratitude and support are capable of emotionally touching even the toughest of police officers in eminently beneficial ways. Ideally, such straightforward and uncensored communications will re-invigorate motivation and singularly boost the individual and collective spirits of those brave folks who every day, seek only to serve their community with honor and distinction. The official Blue Morale Project coloring book, We Salute You!, holds not only many potential benefits for the officers' whose morale may be boosted by the children's comments, but for the children as well. First and foremost, the children will enjoy coloring-in the pictures; the authors recommend coloring pencils rather than crayons (and maybe even one extra blue pencil for each child). Beyond the benefit of recreation, there is the benefit of socialization--with parents, teachers, or other caretakers who will be serving as supervisors ot this project, as well as socialization with peers who will be applying their own artistic preferences to the exact same stimulus materials. Third, the children will benefit from the educational experience of learning something that they were not aware of, in terms of the different roles police officers can play, and the division of labor at a big city police department. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the coloring book, with its unique humanization of the police through its narrative, can be used to stimulate critical thinking, and the challenging of, if not the negation of, the more pejorative stereotypes regarding the police to which children in many communities have been previously exposed, and routinely and uncritically accept as fact. In sum, if you are a potential sponsor interested in supporting local law enforcement agencies, kindly consider how the use of this multipurpose coloring and story book can be used to create a win-win situation for your community, including the children in it, and the police who serve it.
