Excerpt from Bible View of Slavery I proceed, accordingly, to the evi dence of the sacred Scriptures, which, long ago, produced complete conviction in my own mind, and must, as I regard it, be equally conclusive to every can did and sincere inquirer. When the array Of positive proof is exhibited, I shall consider the objections, and ex amine their validity with all the fair ness in my power. The first appearance of slavery in the Bible is the wonderful prediction of the patriarch Noah: Cursed be Canaan, a servant of servants shall he be to his brethren. Blessed be the Lord God of Shem, and Canaan shall be his servant. God shall enlarge J a phet, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem, and Canaan shall be his ser vant. (gen. 9. Excerpt from A Condensed Anti-Slavery Bible Argument A multitude of things must ever bind my affections to the South. I was born on the banks of Virginia's beautiful river Potomac, where my parents spent a considerable portion of their existence, almost in sight of the place where the mortal remains of Washington are deposited. Almost all my relations are there, or in slaveholding states. All my early associations, all those untold bonds that bind us to the scenes of infancy and youth, most of those moral ties which unite us to those we love, for whom we have often prayed, and with whom we have taken sweet counsel together, and walk ed unto the house of God in company - are Virginians. With all thy faults I love thee still, my country - and still must love thee. Fellow-citizens, examine with me this important subject - and follow the guidance of the lamp of life in the path of duty, which is the sure road to Heaven. And let us remember the example of Virginia's noblest son, the Father of his country, who at the last hour, when the soul, in the light of an approaching eter nity, sees with peculiar clearness the boundaries which separate the wrong from the right, restored his slaves to their natural rights. And let us imitate one of Kentucky's bright stars, C. M. Clay, who in the face of all Opposition emancipated thirteen slaves, while yet in health of mind and body. Excerpt from The Testimony of God Against Slavery: A Collection of Passages From the Bible, Which Show the Sin of Holding and Treating the Human Species as Property; With Notes to Which Is Added the Testimony of the Civilized World Against Slavery If Slavery is ever abolished from the world, it will be done by the influence of the Christian Religion. Men never will abandon slave-holding, till they feel it to be a sin against God: and the reason why all who are now concerned in the support of this system, do not feel and act under this conviction is, because they have not examined it in the light of God's word. It is a solemn fact, that there is scarcely any one sin describe in the inspired writings, in all its parts, features, and consequences, so clearly and explicitly, as is the sin of holding and treating the human species as property; and scarcely any other sin has been so frequently denounced in the Bible, with the fearful maledictions of Heaven. Excerpt from Slavery Sanctioned by the Bible: The First Part of a General Treatise on the Slavery Question Thus far, my clerical friends, you have been more like the men of Thessalonica than those of Bereas. With no other scriptural war rant than your mere assumption of the meaning of the word of God, you have preached a political and -moral crusade against slavery. Excerpt from Christianity and Emancipation: Or, the Teachings and the Influence of the Bible Against Slavery A Monstrous libel upon Christianity has lately appeared from the pen of the Professor of History in the University of Ghent. It is the most shocking scandal that the Deism of this age, or of any age, has invented against the Bible. There is nothing more malignant in Voltaire; and, though it is couched in decent phrase, there is scarce anything more blasphemous in Thomas Paine. It is contained in half-a-dozen lines, imbedded in a work of several octavo volumes, entitled, "Studies upon the History of Humanity;" and may be found in the chapter on the enfranchisement of serfs, in the volume upon "Feudalism and the Church." Shall I then reproduce it in the English tongue, and give it currency in a nation that its author could not reach? Alas, it is already current wherever modern Deism assails the divine origin of the Bible; it has found utterance in lyceums and conventions, in newspapers and magazines, as the favorite, because the most effective, weapon of modern infidelity. Excerpt from The Bible and Slavery: A Brief Examination of the Old and New Testaments on Servitude The brief examination of the Bible on the subject of servitude, contained in the following pages, was first suggested to the writer by the perusal of a recent work on the Life and Epistles of the Apostle Paul, in which the word servant in the standard English version had been rejected, and that of slave substituted. Shocked and startled at the effect of this change on many passages, and more especially by the fact that Christ himself would be thereby presented to us as a slave-owner, and those for whom He died be supposed to render in return the involuntary service of slaves; the writer sought in vain from several Christian scholars for a satisfactory reason for refusing to accept it.
