Excerpt from The 13th Son, and Some Other Parables Certain man had thirteen sons. A Now the stargazers and the soothsayers and' the wise women declared with a loud voice that thirteen was an unlucky number. And they prophesied that the thirteenth son would be pursued by misfortune, and there would be no place for him in the land of his birth. But his father said: It is not my fault that my wife is a fruitful vine and Malthus a true prophet. How soever the Lord will provide. Then the first son said: I will be a King or whatever ye choose to call me, Czar or President or Duke, for ye must have some one to rule over ye, and sit upon a throne, and give ye ribbons to wear in your button holes. Then the second son said: I will be a General, a soldier to do your fighting, in case anyone comes to take away the throne of your king, or saith he is bow-legged and cross-eyed and his crown a misfit. Excerpt from The Parable of the Prodigal Son, or From Heaven to Hell and Return We have tried to show the reader that Heaven is a creation of the God of the universe, or, in other words, the Conscious God, and the world is only a. House divided against itself, and a creation of the uncon scious god in man to awaken the truth within and bring out the consciousness. What the Conscious (lod created is real and endures forever, and cannot be forgotten when once known; but the world of belief, or death, is only another name for unconscious ness. Being dead in the sense of unconsciousness does not mean that you cannot believe that you move and have life, for if you did not believe that the world of belief was real, it) would not accomplish that for which it was created, namely, the awakening of the consciousness of life within, where all knowledge dwells. When we say within we include the whole universe, which has no limitations, for man is in the image and likeness of (lod, and (10d means everything that is: so the world is onlv belief, because it will consume itself and pass away. When we sav belief we mean anything that man created and calls by one name or another, because they are all self con suming if you only will give them time enough therefore, such cannot be knowledge or created by God, for all things that God created are eternal, always were and always will be, without beginning or ending. Excerpt from The Parables of the Old Testament F the matter contained in these pages, a small portion has already been published in a series of articles in the Quiver; the greater part is new. It will be seen at once that the work has no claim to originality or independent research or to that wealth of imagination and learning which has made Trench's Notes on the Parables of the New Testament one of the most valuable books of our generation. It addresses itself to simple readers; and is merely a help to Bible reading. Its object is to group together in right connexion and gradation all the phases of parabolic teaching by comparison which present themselves in the Old Testament; to suggest the study of certain striking passages, which are usually too apt to be overlooked and to bring out - what in these days it is especially meces sary to dwell upon - the preparatory character (in this respect as in others) of the teaching of the older Scriptures, leading up to the perfect-revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ. Excerpt from The Parables Them that Jehovah had selected a Syrian leper to be healed and to a Sidonian woman had given back her son. Their own history showed that He was not the God of the Hebrews only but the God of the Gentiles also; and the King dom which their prophets foretold was not a Hebrew Kingdom only but a world Kingdom. And all they in the Synagogue says the sacred historian, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, and rose up and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him'down headlong, but he passing through the midst of them went his way. Ever after Jesus spoke of the Kingdom of God in parables that seeing they might see and not perceive. He veiled the truth which unveiled had been rejected with such wrath, and he did so that they might listen to him without perceiving the truth to which they would refuse to listen if they did perceive it, and that so he might conduct them to his predetermined destination while they did not even know that they were on the jour. Excerpt from The Old Testament Parables IN the following pages an attempt is made to present a faithful exposition and interpretation of what I regard as the Old Testament Parables. The first chapter explains how the list of Parables has been compiled. At no stage of the study are their possibilities of Gospel interpretation or evangelical application overlooked. Not enough is it for us to know their meaning in their own day; we must ask what message, if any, they had for Jesus in whose hands even the dross of the Old Testament was, as Harnack says, changed into gold; its hidden treasures were brought forth but most of all, we must learn their possible value to ourselves in an age when the Old Testament begins to live anew and with an ever-increasing appeal. Acknowledgment of quotations and references has been rendered in the text, but upon a subject whose literature is distinguished by its paucity I have been a grateful gleaner in many fields of Whatever seemed apposite and illuminating. The translations which preface each parable have been construed from a careful reading and com parison of the Septuagint, the Massoretic Hebrew Text and various English translations. Excerpt from The Prodigal Son It tells the sinner everything that is needful to be known. It tells him how he may return to Jesus; and it assures him of a hearty welcome. How touchingly tender is the parable, in all its parts. How well calculated to cause to vibrate the finest chords in the human heart. By the employing of the figure of a father and child, and by the perfect representation of the father's solicitude, it must have brought conviction to even the hard hearts.
