Excerpt from d104-Book of Operative Surgery The First English Edition, published in 1895, was translated from the Second German Edition, published in 1894. This, the Second English Edition, which is a translation of the F ourth (latest) German Edition, is only a few pages less than twice the size of its predecessor. There have also been added 70 new illustrations, many of Which are coloured. The sections dealing with Anaesthesia, the Treatment of Wounds, the Head and Neck, Thorax, Abdomen and Pelvis, have been entirely rewritten, and' the same may be said of the sections on Amputations and Excisions. Compared, therefore, with the former English Edition, the present work may be regarded as practically a new book. Since the publication of the F ourth German Edition there has appeared, in the Zentralblatt few Chirurgie, of l0th J annary, 1903, a paper from the pen of Professor kocher, entitled Mobilisierung des Duodenum und Gastro duodenostomie. The author speaks so highly of the operation that I have considered it advisable to introduce, in the form of an appendix, a translation of this important paper. For the time and labour expended in the translation the writer derives no i'nconsiderable reward from the consciousness that the teaching and methods of so great a master as Professor kocher will be welcomed not only by senior students. And practitioners, but also by all who are actively engaged in the teaching and practice of surgery. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Text-Book of Operative Surgery, Vol. 1 of 2 N o apology is needed for the endeavour to render more accessible to the profession in this country a work on operative surgery by so eminent an authority as Professor Kocher. The book is essentially a record of the author's personal experience and of his own methods of operation. To avoid an appearance of egotism he has written in the first person plural, and this plan has been followed in the translation. The first English edition, which appeared in 1895, was translated from the second German edition, while the second English edition, which was twice the size of its predecessor, was translated from the fourth German edition. The present volume is a translation of the fifth and latest German edition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Text-Book of Operative Surgery, Covering the Surgical Anatomy and Operative Technic Involved in the Operations of General Surgery: Written for Students and Practitioners The clinical aspect of Operative Surgery has been less fully dealt with and in generalizations in connection with groups of operations, rather than specifically in connection with individual operations. An apology for the amount of Anatomy given may seem, to some, meces sary. From the standpoint of the pure technician, Operative Surgery is, largely, Applied Anatomy - the application of the facts of Surgical Anatomy during the progress of Surgical Manipulations - the resulting Operative Technic being more or less perfect as the knowledge of the Surgical Anatomy and the conduction of the Surgical Manipulations are more or less perfect. Theoretically, it is proper to expect fourth - year Students to come into the Operating Room with their Anatomy in an available form for surgical work - practically, this is rarely found - and is often absent in seasoned Operators. Excerpt from Surgical Technic: A Text-Book on Operative Surgery The author strictly fulfilled the requirements of the competition, but at the same time he purposed to make this handbook a practical aid to memory. In his opinion this could be better accomplished by illustrations than by a cumbersome text. A glance at an illustration representing a dressing, an operation, or an anatomical preparation, enables one to recall to memory most rapidly all former knowledge concerning the same.
